199 South Murphy Avenue

Page history last edited by Michael 14 years, 9 months ago

A two-story masonry commercial building at the corner of South Murphy Ave. and West Washington Avenue, built in 1905 as the "Bank of Sunnyvale", and heavily remodelled before 1955 with a "modern" style. The ground floor is "Ace Loan Office", part of a small chain of South Bay pawnshops; the upper floor has a separate entrance (at 197 Murphy), and no visible signage. South Murphy Avenue is only one block long, ending at a parking lot across West Washington (part of the Sunnyvale Town Center); the northern end is West Evelyn Avenue (with the Caltrain station across Evelyn).

"Murphy Avenue is one of the last original downtown retail streets as mapped in 1897.  In 1981, the Murphy Heritage Landmark District was created, encompassing all of the 100 block of South Murphy Avenue and adjacent buildings on Evelyn and Washington Avenues.  In the mid 1980s, new light posts, special paving, benches and planters were added to Murphy Avenue."

Bars, clubs, billiards halls, and other small businesses line South Murphy; on Saturdays, a farmers' market operates in the street. A big new mall is being built to the south, across West Washington Avenue.

This building is about 1/2 mile from Fire Station 1.
