Anton Freiherr von Kusseltraub
disgraced Austrian soldier and aristocrat
6' tall, 195 pounds, broad shoulders, narrow waist, dark brown eyes, salt-and-pepper short hair, mustache. In Novostia, he wears a hussar's uniform -- dark blue jacket with silver trim, tight red pants, very showy.
-
social goal: men will respect his power and authority!
-
professional goal: a successful military officer
-
romantic goal: can't quite be described in polite company
-
nemesis: his disgraceful past
Born in 1829, one of several sons of a minor, poor but ancient baronial family (all male sons of the current baron are also titled). He became an Imperial cadet, and started his military career during the disturbances of 1848. By 1866 he was a Major, commanding a Hungarian huszaren squadron normally based at Hermannstadt.
During the war with Prussia in 1866 he led his troops with distinction. Just at the peak of his career, the day before he was to be inducted into the Military Order of Maria Theresa by the Emperor, his ... unusual tastes came to official attention. He was expected to "do the right thing", but refused to shoot himself -- the army was unwilling to court-martial him, but managed to remove him from military service.
He spent a couple of years brooding and indulging in his peculiar interests, while living on various Aegean islands. In 1869 he accepted an offer to serve with the Ottoman army. He commanded units in the Balkans, suppressing revolts and taking part in some little-known (and well-concealed) massacres and atrocities. The Sultan eventually was obliged to release Kusseltraub from service in 1874, after the bashi-bazouks complained about his cruelty.
Dr.-Ing. Schreck contacted the Baron soon afterwards, offering a position within him revolutionary army.
The baron is a loud, blustering officer, but certainly brave. While honorable after a fashion, he feels that moral responsibility for his acts lies with his superiors.
He speaks excellent Austrian-accented German, and good English, French, Hungarian, Italian, and Polish. He can deal with military matters in Turkish, Levantine Arabic, Croat, Romanian, Czech, and a half-dozen other languages found in the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires. He has a schoolboy's knowledge of Latin and Greek.
His usual weapons are a rather baroque .44 caliber revolver (a Gasser, to be specific) and a sabre; but he's familiar with pretty much every kind of military small arm found in European armies (rifles, carbines, lances, etc.).
