Murree Town is a mountain resort and hill station in the Punjab province of India. It's 39 miles from Rawalpindi, on a spur of the Himalaya range; the altitude is 7500' above sea level. The year-round population is only about 2,000; but in the summer it swells to more than 10,000 persons, and becomes the de facto capital of the North West Frontier (Simla performs a similar function for much of the Indian government). There are a few schools, hospitals, retirement homes, and a brewery (the only industry of any importance).

The pleasant summer weather is the key to Murree's summer popularity; the winters are cold and snowy.

Buses and motorcars connect the town to Rawalpindi; within and about the town, westerners can use tangas, a two-wheeled carriage drawn by horses.

There are many Gothic, Tudor and Elizabethan structures in the town, which is built on and along an irregular ridge, with magnificent views over forest-clad hills into deep valleys studded with villages and cultivated fields. On a clear day, several snow-covered mountain peaks can be seen.

Natives (non-Europeans) are not allowed into the main shopping district, known as the Mall.

The permanent military presence is three batteries of mountain artillery. During the summer, many British military units establish camps here.
