Mica Goggles – Attuned by Bill, Algy, and Lotta

From the Lizardmen and the Chi-Ninja assailants. Think of a papier-mâché carnival mask that covers the eyes as well as most of the nose, upper cheekbones and a bit of the forehead. However instead of papier-mâché, the mask is made from tobacco leaf tan colored stone. The mask piece has had wire earpieces attached with brackets that were riveted onto the mask. The wire is a (very magnetic) high tensile strength iron alloy. Above where the brackets have been attached, are signs of where the mask could once have been attached to a helmet of some kind.

The lenses are attached to a vaguely face shaped piece of soft stone that was contoured some as it was worked. The lenses are about 1.25" across and made of a dingy semitranslucent white/very light grey thin mica-like stone. The stone that comprises the lenses is 'mottled' with other earth tones. The windows were also 'retrofitted' to the masks as they have been attached to the masks with silvery brackets that apparently replace other lenses that could be slotted into the mask. The brackets were drilled into the existing lens 'slots' in a manner similar to the earpiece brackets.

All in all, the goggles seem solid and durable, weighing about 5.5oz. It would not take much work to break off the earpieces or pry off the riveted brackets holding them. The lens brackets are very sharp to the touch but never seem so when the goggles are being worn, although when removed there are ‘wear marks’ on wearer’s face. Removing the brackets would be more difficult and could break the lens slots.

Provides limited low-light vision as well as seeing “auras”. Wearers have difficulty in looking closely at non-intelligent mundane life forms (animals).

Req: 1 point permanent POW to attune, versus a POW 13 item.

Chi-Ninja Small Crossbow - 1

Fragile construction of copper, brass, steel, and several types of wood. The bow cables are made from silver, copper, steel, and animal hair. Can be fired in an 'nearly silent’ manner, given the limitations of the construction of a crossbow and the available materials. The crossbows require 2 hands to operate and are made to be worn on the right forearm. The 'magazine/feed device' extends diagonally down along the outer edge of the wielders arm. The cocking device has a 9in pull along the inner side of wielders arm. Cocking is not at all silent. The trigger is on the left edge near the end of the 'run' of the cocking bar.

The quarrel heads have channels formed into them, likely for some sort of semi-solid material. Quarrels weigh approx 2oz each and are made of light hardwood with surgical steel points. The bolts are 8in long and are made entirely of (after successful library use and botany rolls) Chinese mourning cypress. You have 41 quarrels in total. In theory, additional quarrels could be made after successful research.

Dimensions: 12in length, 10in width (at widest point). Weight: 3.5lbs. Range: *20* yards, 1 shot per melee round (requires both hands). Capacity: 6 quarrels. Malfunctions on >90%. Likely to have spectacular fumbles

(1D6+2, 4HP/2AP, +5% to hit, 20% base (+5% bonus).  Str 11, Dex 11) Req: Atuning – 1 pt. perm POW, vs. a POW 12 device.

Chinese Wootz Steel heavy blades4

The blades are made from Wootz steel. The crosspiece guard is made from modern steel. The handles are made from a type of cedar (Japanese or Sugi Cedar, in this case from the Sikkim district in northeast India, near the border with China). The pommel is made from red brass.   18" long by about 3" deep single edged, with thin hand guard. (1D6, 12HP/8AP, 25% base. Str 9, Dex 9)

Matched Norman-style Long swords - 12

Buddhist text – To Qua Lin

The Sammitiya sect version of a Pali Canon text of a Sutta Pitaka that relates to the 3rd Skandha (Perception). It is written on several pieces of crumbling, worked bark in Pali, a Middle Indo-Aryan language of India, using Brahmic script. The pieces of bark are tied together with ancient silk cord.

The Pāli Canon is the standard collection of scriptures in the Theravada Buddhist tradition, as preserved in the Pāli language. It is the only completely surviving early Buddhist canon, and one of the first to be written down. The Pali Canon was first written down in the reign of King Vattagāmini (Vaṭṭagāmiṇi) (1st century BCE) in Sri Lanka, at the Fourth Buddhist council.

It was composed in North India, and preserved orally until it was committed to writing during the Fourth Buddhist Council in Sri Lanka in 29 BCE, approximately four hundred and fifty four years after the death of Shākyamuni. The Pali Canon was first printed in the nineteenth century.

The Pāli Canon falls into three general categories, called pitaka (from Pali piṭaka, meaning "basket"). Because of this, the canon is traditionally known as the Tipiṭaka (Sanskrit: Tripiṭaka; "three baskets"). The three pitakas are as follows:

  • Vinaya Pitaka ("Discipline Basket"), dealing with rules for monks and nuns
  • Sutta Pitaka (Sutra/Sayings Basket), discourses, mostly ascribed to the Buddha, but some to disciples
  • Abhidhamma Pitaka, variously described as philosophy, psychology, metaphysics etc.

The Sammitiya sect was an offshoot of the Vatsiputriya and one of twenty or so early schools of Buddhism in India. Like its predecessor, it claims the person (Sanskrit: pudgala) as a carrier of skandhas endures.
