Staff Study 40/1

CLM Staff Study 40/1:  Defeat Doom Riders

“Sir, I know how eager you are to defeat the Doom Riders, and remove the threat they pose to all our many friends and colleagues. I took the liberty of working up a short staff study as to how we can get a sizeable force out on the Doom Rider’s right flank and maybe keep them out of Ultraviolet and the Green River Valley. I would be most grateful if you would look it over.”

Today is June 26th. We start Interviewing Lads tomorrow Morning at 10am. We can send a request to King Jubal to contact the Ravagers in your name to send some trucks to meet us in Bone City.

In a week, or possibly less (no later than July 1st), we can have our vehicles, and the DRA component, on the river heading for Bone City, with about 80 troops on board. If we can get the Boise Brigade to provide horses, we can move more Montanans faster. We will need to make sure that our Willamette Lads have cartridge weapons, or are manning/assisting on crew served weapons.

Around July 4th, we will have 80+ troops in Bone City, with 5 trucks and the v-150, XR-311, and the Gun Truck.

Around July 9th, another 150 to 200 troops will depart Portland by boat for Bone City

Around July 13th, we will have reached the Green Mountains, EAST of the Green River Valley with these forces, and be in a position to link up with the Ravagers. We will be in a position to shield the Green River Valley from the Doom Riders, guard the Left Flank of Ultraviolet, and act as a hammer, striking the Doom Riders in the rear if they continue South to attack the Cartel, as we think they will.

Around July 17th, the 3rd echelon of troops will depart Portland. Another 80 to 150 Troops, depending on transport available in Bone City.

By July 21st, our second echelon of troops will arrive in the Green Mountains. We will have roughly 250 troops in the Green Mountain area, not counting Ravagers, Green River Valley, and Boise Brigade. These troops could number up to another 500 men.

By the 29th of July, our 3rd echelon will have arrived. We should have upwards of 1000 men operating in conjunction with the Cartel and Morrow forces to the south. If we can get the Canadians to come in from the north, we will have the makings of a real, old time hootenanny!

Enemy Forces

3,000 to 10,000 Doom Riders, almost all on jeeps, cars, trucks and motorcycles. By the time we make it out there, they will most likely have hit Casper, and will not be short on fuel. We believe that they are headed SOUTH to strike New Mexico and hit the Cartel.

Their own intelligence would have identified the Cartel as being the next target/threat. Hopefully much of the Doom Rider forces will be down in New Mexico, trying to push past Las Vegas into Trader Pass. "Master Singer, there's no sign of any planning or organization from the west ... they are no threat this summer."

Friendly Forces

  • The Montanan Regiment:

    • 280 Montanan infantry (hardened troops, can ride, but don't have horses), with single-shot 12 gauge cartridge rifles

    • 20 Montanan mounted infantry, ditto rifles, plus swords (they call themselves cavalry, and include several knights)

    • 200 "tier two" infantry (natives of Newtown or the Willamette Valley), not so well armed:  crossbows, bows, muzzle-loading muskets or rifles

    • the above does not include about 500 Newtown Militiamen, armed as the "tier two" infantry, but not so well trained or physically fit.

      • you aren't taking the whole Regiment, this just lists the lot of them

  • Willamette Valley Lads, recruited in late June, mostly from near Oregon City. This presumes you reject anyone who would need a month of training to be any use

    • 20 infantry, trained to use muzzle-loading rifles; they bring two 40mm smoothbore grenade launchers. These are Oregon City militiamen.

    • 20 mounted infantry, armed with muzzle-loading carbines and swords, but from a variety of places in the Willamette Valley

  • The DRA

    • four heavy 6x6 military trucks (biodiesel fuel; these run on "420 Diesel", heh). Their engagement (transport vs. tactical) depends on negotiation. They can arrange their own transport to Portland.

    • two 6x6 armored cars, basically military trucks with BTR-70 turrets. They don't have a lot of 14.5mm ammo, and it's all 22nd Century reloads (so the guns are essentially hand-operated)

    • 20 men, including a unit commander, unit NCO and 4 mechanics/spare drivers

  • The Ravagers

    • an estimate of a couple hundred troops, 5 cargo trucks, 2 busses, and a half-dozen autogyro bikes is probably the best you can expect; they are kooky and unreliable.

  • Green River Valley militia

    • they probably can raise 50 or 100 mounted militia, skilled in the use of firearms but NOT used to mass combat. Think of the Continental Army ... not useful when standing up to the howling charge of a Doom Rider army in tactical vehicles. Most have cartridge-firing rifles, including some magazine rifles (e.g., Winchesters)

    • their willingness to proceed east towards Ultraviolet will depend on how much their homeland is being/has been menaced by the Doom Riders. They certainly would rather fight the Doom Riders east of the Red Desert.

    • the Wild West Girl Gang are nominally part of this unit.

  • Ultraviolet

    • Jubal's army has a lot of heavy crossbows, 20 single-shot cartridge rifles in 11mm caliber, two Civil War muzzle-loading cannons, and a lot of booby traps ... as of the last detailed report. They have been aware of the Doom Rider menace, of course, and have probably been upgrading their forces. The army numbers at least 400 men mounted on horseback, plus the former Feemen (who are not very skilled soldiers, can't ride, and probably weren't trusted with firearms). Your team is in contact with Jubal every week or so, by radio.

  • Sisterhood of Shadows (i.e., the ninja-ettes)

    • they will probably show up to be helpful.

  • the Rangers

    • they will probably show up to be helpful. There are only 20 pairs of active Rangers, though, and they're not all gonna be in the right area. They use various .30-06 and 7.62mm NATO weapons. The Rangers assigned to help the Morrow Project are commanded by Sgt. First Class Choi.

  • The Boise Brigade

    • they were grudgingly willing to help with the Montanan refugees last year, presumably the Doom Rider menace is on their minds. I suspect a "we can be victorious together, or defeated in small groups" argument would work best with them

    • the Brigade is 200 mounted men; about half of the Brigade carry a cartridge weapon; the rest use crossbows, or muzzle-loading or breech-loading non-cartridge weapons. They have two scrap tanks, one of which has a .50 cal machine gun in its turret (the other has no mounted weapons).

    • you don't have any radio contact with them; or rather, they don't have any radios, and don't have a good system of providing 12 volt power.

  • Canadians

    • you don't have any reliable means of contacting them, and have no history of working together. They may help without knowing it, by fighting the Doom Riders at the Canadian border.

Fort Boise is just off the left edge of the map

In the following table "in transit" means east of Portland"; the war zone is east of South Pass (between the Wind River Range and the Red Desert). Troops don't count until they are contacted by the Morrow team. Here's a map showing conditions around July 14th:

From the US Army Field Service Regulations of 1908:

Large mules on good roads can do nearly 5 miles per hour; but in favorable field conditions 2 to 2.5 miles per hour (including halts) is all that can be expected.

"The length of the average march for infantry and for mixed commands consisting partly of foot troops is 15 miles per day. with a day of rest at least once a week. Small commands of seasoned infantry marching on good roads in cool weather can cover 20 miles per day, but in extensive operations involving large bodies of troops the average rate of progress will not exceed 10 miles per day. Field artillery marches 15 to 20 miles a day; cavalry, after men and animals are hardened, 25 miles a day; wagon trains about the same as infantry "
