"Sergent Ivan Ivanov,

huit ans de service,

compagnie de le génie, cinquième escadron motorisé,

1er Régiment étranger de cavalerie."

("eight years of service, engineer company, 5th motorised squadron, 1st Legion Cavalry Regiment")

Ivan Yankovsky Ivanov:  5' 9", 260 lbs., born 1897, age 36. Grizzled black beard (by regulation), short black hair (with a few gray hairs), hairy knuckles, arms, etc. Heavyset, immensely strong, extremely leathery and suntanned -- imagine Festus from Gunsmoke as a Russian weightlifter. Various military tattoos. Uses glasses for reading. Very carefully turned out (when in garrison at least).

Born to a peasant farming family in the town of Petrova, in Tula province. Raised as an Orthodox believer, still reasonably devout in the fine peasant way -- carries a crucifix.

  • Conscripted in 1914 into the Russian army, assigned to an engineer unit ("mostly digging trenches and gun pits").
  • From 1918 to 1922, served with various White units in Siberia.
  • 1922 to 1924, serving with General Nechayez's mercenary Russian units around Peking, in the Second Zhili-Fengtian War
  • Joined the French Foreign Legion in 1925.
  • From 1925 to date, working all over Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria. The 1er REC is based at Sousse, midway between Tunis and Sfax along the coast road. Now in his second five-year term of enlistment, he's reached (and been reduced to) the rank of Sergent. He has received the Medaille Militaire, the Medaille Coloniale (with clasps AFRIQUE, MAROC and SAHARA) and the Medaille Blesse (with star); he is also entitled to wear the fourragere of the Medaille Militaire (as part of the 1er REC); plus the St. George Medal while he was with the Russian army.

Has been a machinist, steam-shovel operator, locomotive driver, mule handler, trench digger, fortress builder, (simple) demolitionist, bridge-builder, (primitive) hardhat diver, miner, officer's valet, etc. Knows just enough about electrical repair to fix cars and splice field telephones and telegraphs. Can use (though not by any means a marksman) pistols, rifles, and machineguns. Good with knives, fists, improvised weapons. Hard-drinking, good bass-baritone singing voice. Fairly good at "camping" type skills (cooking in the field, cleaning game, etc.), and at desert survival. Can drive trucks, cars, motorcycles, tractors, etc., and ride horses ... none with any attempts at speed. His pay in the FFL is 60 centimes a day ... 24 cents American.

Here are some typical loads for Ivanov. Load limits are 59.4 lbs (ordinary), 118.8 lbs (heavily loaded), and 237.6 lbs (burdened).
