Pulp SMCP Mystery Sub
back to Sea Transportation
A short-range cargo submarine, of mysterious origin. Length 90', beam 19', displacement (surfaced) 275 tons. Surface speed 10 kts, submerged 6 kts; range 800 nautical miles at 8 kts, 500 nautical miles at 10 kts, submerged 40 nautical miles at 4 kts, 65 nautical miles at 2 kts; max designed depth 200'. Armament: normally none, but a machinegun or light deck gun could be fitted aft of the conning tower. Crew: 12.
Includes an air-lock and fittings to allow deep-sea divers (two at once) to emerge from the vessel while submerged. The cargo hold is about 15' wide, 9' deep, and 24' long, with a hydraulically-opened hatch; a maximum of about 50 tons of cargo can be carried. The hold can be sealed off from the rest of the submarine, and the hatch opened underwater; but only when the submarine is resting on the bottom already (the loss of bouyancy caused by flooding the cargo hold would cause the submarine to rapidly dive). A crane of about 3 tons capacity can be unfolded from along one edge of the hatch (but not when underwater), and can reach about 12' past the edge of the deck.
