German Military Vehicles

Soviet Military Walkers

Armored Train

And more:

Austin Type 3

British armored car; 4- or 5-man crew, with two MG turrets; 7.5mm vertical armor, 4mm horizontal armor, mass ~5 tons; 50 HP engine, top speed 30 to 35 mph, range about 125 miles; about $3,000; first introduced 1917, used widely by all Great War allies, and by the Soviet Union (as the Austin-Putilov; the Soviets also converted some to half-tracks as the Austin-Kegresse - top speed 15 mph, range only 60 miles). One of the crew members is a rear driver.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:  14 for vertical, 10 for horizontal

BA-6

Soviet armored car; 4-man crew (driver, hull gunner, gunner, commander) with 45mm main gun and 2 MG; armor 9mm; weight 5.12 tons. 40 HP GAZ-A engine, top speed 40 mph highway, 20 mph off-road, range 120 miles. Two-wheel drive, leading to poor off-road performance. Introduced 1935, but the earlier BA-3 is very similar; another version, the BA-6ZhD, can be converted to run on Russian-gauge railway tracks. The 45mm main gun armor-piercing round will penetrate 42mm of armor. The BA-6 is based on the GAZ-AAA chassis, in turn based on the Ford Model AA truck. The first armored car fitted with "run-flat" tires. Besides the Soviet Union, they are used by Turkey, Afghanistan, China, and the Republican Spaniards.

Call of Cthulhu armor value:  15

BA-20

Soviet armored car; 3-man crew (driver, gunner/commander, radio operator) with a 7.62mm MG in a small turret; armor 10mm; weight 2.5 tons. 50 HP V-8 engine, top speed 53 mph highway, 20 mph off-road, range 280 miles. Introduced 1934, based on the GAZ M-1, in turn based on the Ford Model B chassis -- two-wheel drive means poor off-road performance. Some are equipped with a flamethrower instead of a machinegun; some can exchange their regular wheels for railway wheels. Besides the Soviet Army, it will be used by the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War.

Call of Cthulhu armor value:  15.

BT-5

Soviet cavalry tank; 3-man crew (driver, gunner, commander) with 45mm main gun and coaxial MG (the turret is also used on the BA-6 armored car and some other vehicles); armor 13mm except only 10mm at rear; weight 11 tons. The 350 HP engine (a copy of the American V-12 Liberty aircraft engine) and Christie suspension give a top speed of 36 mph, and a cross-country range of 100 miles (200 miles on highways). Some of the nearly two thousand BT-5 tanks produced in the Soviet Union since 1932 are equipped with radios; a dozen or so are fitted out as flamethrower vehicles, and some have been used in tests for snorkelling and amphibious propulsion. The 45mm main gun armor-piercing round will penetrate 42mm of armor.

Call of Cthulhu armor value:  16 except at the rear, which is 15.

Citroën Modèle 1929

French half-track; 3-man crew, with a 37mm SA-18 main gun , and a 7.5mm coax MG. 11.4mm front armor; 4 cylinder gasoline engine of 60 HP, top speed 30 mph, weight 7.6 tons. A 33 gallon fuel tank gives a range of 150 miles. A variant of the Citroën-Kegresse half-tracks, produced from 1930 for the French military (as the AMC P 16). The crew consists of the gunner/commander, and two drivers -- one facing forwards, one facing to the rear!

Call of Cthulhu armor value:  17 at the front, probably 15 on the sides and rear.

Dyrenkov-8

Soviet armored car; 2-man crew (driver and gunner) with two 7.62mm MG, not mounted in turret initially; armor 7mm sides, 6mm rear, 3mm top; weight 1.6 tons. 40 HP GAZ-A engine, top speed 53 mph highway, 25 mph off-road, range 140 miles. Introduced 1931, based on the GAZ-A automobile (in turn based on the Ford Model A) -- two-wheel drive gives poor off-road performance. Some will be delivered to the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:   front and sides 13, rear 11, top 10.

FAI

Soviet armored car; 2 or 3-man crew (driver, commander/gunner, and theoretically a radio operator) with one 7.62mm MG in a small turret; armor 6mm sides, 4mm rear, 3mm top; weight 2 tons. 40 HP GAZ-A engine, top speed 50 mph highway, 25 mph off-road, range 125 miles. Introduced 1930, based on the GAZ-A automobile (in turn based on the Ford Model A) -- two-wheel drive gives poor off-road performance. A replacement for the D-8, and in turn replaced by the BA-20. Besides the Soviet Army, a score were used by the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:  front and sides 13, rear and top 10.

Laffly-White

French armored car; 5-man crew, with 37mm SA-18 main gun and 7.5mm coax MG; 20mm front armor, 7mm side; 4 cylinder gasoline engine of 50 HP, top speed 43 mph; about $5000; produced from 1933 for French military.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:   front 22, other faces 15.

Renault Modèle 1917

French light tank; 2 man crew (driver and gunner); engine is Renault 4 cylinder 39 HP (rather finicky); top speed about 5 mph, range about 40 miles from a 95 liter gas tank - but lucky to get 20 miles without an engine problem. Made in "male" (about 1/3 of total production, usually with a 37mm cannon) or "female" (about 2/3 of total production, machine gun only) versions; front and turret armor 16mm or 22mm (depending on manufacturer and date constructed), side armor 16mm. Thousands of these tanks were built by Renault and other manufacturers during and after the Great War, and they serve with armies all over the world. Countless minor variations exist; the Russian and Italian models are (for example) capable of 10 mph top speed). Cost, new in the Twenties, $3,200.

The 37mm Puteaux SA-18 L/21 cannon is a short-barrel, low-velocity gun fitted to various French light tanks and armored cars of the Twenties and Thirties. The usual ammunition mix for the "male" tanks is 50 rounds AP, 150 rounds HE, and 30 rounds of grapeshot; rate of fire is 15 rounds per minute. On the P16 half-track, the gun comes with 40 rounds of AP and 60 rounds of HE.

HE Mle 1916:  1.2 lb projectile, filled with 1 ounce of explosive; complete round 1.6 lbs

HE Mle 1937:  1.2 lb projectile, filled with 2 ounces of explosive

AP Mle 1892 m.24:  1.1 lb projectile, filled with 1/2 ounce of explosive, with a penetration of 12mm in RHA steel at zero (0) meters

AP Mle 1937:  0.9 lb projectile, no explosive filling, penetration 18mm in RHA steel at 400 meters

Call of Cthulhu armor values:  front and turret 20 or 22 (depending on maker), sides 20.

Panhard 178

French armored car; 4-man crew (including a rear-facing co-driver), with 25mm Hotchkiss SA35 main gun and 150 rounds of ammo, and a coax MG with 3750 rounds; 20mm hull front armor, 13mm side armor; four cylinder 105 HP engine, top speed 40 mph; weight 8 tons. Cost about $12,000, entered service with the French Army in 1937. Notable for slow turret traverse, unreliable radios, and poor cross-country performance.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:  front 22, sides and rear 18.

Rolls Royce

British armored car; 4-man crew, with .303 Vickers MG; 10mm armor; straight-6 50 HP engine, top speed 60 mph; about $10,000; very reliable, this is the 1924 pattern.

Call of Cthulhu armor value:  16.

T-37A

Soviet amphibious tank; 2 man crew (driver, gunner); 40 HP copy of Ford engine gives top speed of 20 mph on land, 22 gallons of gasoline gives it a cross-country range of 110 miles. In the water, top speed is 4 mph, maybe 5 mph. Weight is 3 tons. The only armament is a turret-mounted machinegun; armor 9mm on front and sides, 3mm top, bottom and rear. Mass produced from late 1933; the T-37 is also used in various tests for dropping tanks from aircraft via parachute (or just bouncing them off the ground), tests of variable buoyancy snorkelling tanks, tests of autogyro tanks, tests of recoilless rifles, etc.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:  front and sides 15, all other faces 10.

Vickers Medium Mark II**

British tank; 5 man crew (driver, gunner, commander, loader, machinegunner); Armstrong-Siddely 8 cylinder 90 HP engine gives top speed of 13 to 15 mph. Armament 47mm (3 pounder) main gun, coaxial machinegun, 2 other machineguns; fitted with a radio; armor 25mm on the front, 17mm on the sides and rear. A fairly popular but lightly armored British-built tank from the early Twenties, also built in infantry carrier, artillery tractor, self-propelled gun, command vehicle, etc. versions. Cost, about $50,000.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:  front 23, sides and rear 21.

Vickers 6-ton Type B

British tank; 3 man crew (driver, commander, gunner); weight 8.6 tons; Armstrong-Siddely 'Puma' 92 HP engine gives top speed of 22 mph; 48 gallon fuel tank gives a range of 100 miles on roads, 50 miles off-road. Armament 47mm (3 pounder) main gun with about 50 rounds of ammunition, plus a coaxial rifle-caliber machinegun, and (only in Finnish versions) a hull-mounted submachinegun; armor 17.5mm on hull front and sides, 13.6mm on the turret, 10mm on lower hull and rear, 5mm on hull deck and underside. Introduced around 1930 as an improvement over the Medium Mark II, and in production till 1939. Much more reliable than the previous generation of tanks; by the start of the Second World War, this will be the second most common tank in the world (after the Renault FT-17), used by Bolovia, Bulgaria, China, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Finland, India, Poland, Portugal, Siam and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union is also building a copy of the 6 Ton B as the T-26, with a 37mm gun; the Finns are buying a version from Vickers with a licence-built Bofors 37mm main gun and a 4-man crew. The 6-ton Type A has two turrets, with machineguns only; there is also an artillery towing version (the Vickers Medium Tractor) and an open-topped AAA version fitted with a 2-pdr pom-pom. Price (for Finnish versions) £4,500  (without armament, optics, or radios) - about $16,000.

Call of Cthulhu armor values:  front and sides 21, turret 18, lower hull and rear 16, deck and underside 13.
