Pulp Insect Class Gunboats

Displacement:  645 tons

Armament:  two 6" guns, one 3" AA gun, one 2 pdr pom-pom, six Lewis .303" machineguns

Engines:  triple expansion steam engines, 2000 HP, driving two propellors in tunnels. Top speed 18 knots, usual top speed 14 knots

Fuel:  54 tons oil, enough for two weeks' steaming

 

Built 1915-16 for duty on the Danube, but served mostly in the Middle East. They were brought to China in the early Twenties. Any swell over 5' makes them rather unstable.  The ships were Aphis, Bee, Cicala, Cockchafer, Cricket, Glowworm, Gnat, Ladybird, Mantis, Moth, Scarab and Tarantula.
