South Park

Page history last edited by Michael 10 years, 7 months ago

back to the Index

A high valley in the Colorado Rockies, with several hundred impoverished inhabitants. Rarely visited, since they discourage trading; they have a stand-offish relationship of some sort with the Waste Lords to the south.

Origin

Pre-War

Residents of Colorado mostly; nobody in particular.

Post-War

The Long Winter covered South Park in snow year-round. About 3 meters of volcanic ash was deposited on the area in 2020 by the Yellowstone eruption. No permanent residents returned until at least 2070.

What Outsiders Know

A few poor people live there, herding sheep and trying to raise some crops.

The Reality

     Who knows?

Population

About 350, living in 80 farms.

Territory and Locations

South Park is a basin valley in the Colorado Rockies. There are no towns.

South Park

A grassland basin at about 3000 meters elevation, with an area of about 250,000 hectares. It's drained by the South Platte River. It's usually about 50 kilometers across. About 3 meters of volcanic ash was deposited on the area in 2020 by the Yellowstone eruption.

The easiest way into the basin is through the Kenosha Pass, on the east side.

Organization

Government, National and Local

Almost none; the farmers might act communally against invaders or predators.

Justice, Social Control, Punishment

     Primitive, no doubt.

Political Factions, Dissent

Unclear if there is any, given the isolation of the farms.

Famous/Infamous Persons

     None are known of.

Relationships with Other Groups

The Kingdom of Ultraviolet has a good relationship with the sheep ranchers of South Park. Most of the valley's trade is with Ultraviolet.

The Waste Lords and Ravagers don't seem to have bothered with South Park much.

Culture

Ethnic Groups, Immigration and Emigration

Normal American types, a mix of Caucasian, American Indian, Mexican American, and others.

Social Divisions and Castes

     Unknown.

Religion, Beliefs and Superstition

     Unknown.

Morality and Values

     Unknown.

Progress and Failure

     Unknown.

Family, Age, Sexuality and Gender

Each farm is a nuclear family. How the farm families are related, marriage customs, etc. is unknown.

Education and Language

Roadtalk is the native language; it's unlikely that the people of South Park are literate.

Environment and Agriculture

The farms and ranches across South Park work hard to support themselves; there's certainly no excess of food. Horses, goats, and sheep are the usual livestock; the farms also breed some very good watch and herd dogs. Agricultural products include turnips, potatoes, cabbages, garlic, onions, carrots, fennel, spinach, rhubarb, artichokes, strawberries ...

Food

     Blah blah ...

Art and Entertainment, Music, Literature, Recreation

     Blah blah ...

Fashion and Appearance

The men are clean-shaven and wear trousers and coarse shirts; women wear robes and long skirts. Everyone wears broad-brimmed straw hats.

Urban and Rural Areas, Architecture

The farms are cabins of stone and logs, with shake or thatch roofs. None are very large; but around every farmhouse are corrals, gardens, sheds, outhouses, etc.

Equipment and Resources

Economy

     Blah blah ...

Science, Medicine and Technology

     Early 19th Century stuff.

Weapons and Military Equipment

The farmers might have muzzle-loading muskets -- or only bows or knives.

Communications

Messages are carried on foot or horseback.

Vehicles

They have some horses for riding, pulling wagons, etc.

Aircraft

     None.

Watercraft

     None.
