The Aravan system is centered on the large, white star known to Earthlings as Sirius A, 8.6 light years from Terra. A white dwarf companion, Sirius B, orbits the primary star at a great distance, with an orbital period of 50 years. The only inhabited planet, also known as Aravan, orbits Sirius A at 5 AU out. Aravan has no moons.

The planet Aravan was the location of a rebel base during the Rim Rebellion 2,500 years ago. After the success of the Rebellion it became the capital world of the Sirian Principality. It was an airless, lifeless, rocky world until terraformed over a period of several hundred years. It has had a breathable atmosphere for about 1,500 years; but some of the cities are still under domes. UV radiation from Sirius A is definitely a problem for humans on the surface of Aravan - wear your sun-block. Small seas, forests, and agriculture are all the result of the Principality's efforts. The planet's gravity, climate, length of day, etc. are reasonably Earth-like now.

The only city, Capitol, is also the location of the major spaceport. The planet has no manufacturing or resource industries of note; much of the surface is dedicated to parks, royal and aristocratic estates, or agriculture. There are always military and naval forces in the system; a space-dock orbits high above the planet.

Only about 2 million people inhabit the world. It is ruled by the Principality; a Governor represents the planet in the Royal Assembly.
