SpaceHero Lindesleed

back to the SpaceHero Atlas

Located about 150 light-years from Earth is the Lindesleed system, centered on a K9 orange star. There are three planets; the first an uninhabited ball of rock and metal, heated to 350 K by the sun. The third is an unremarkable methane-ammonia gas giant, with several small ice-and-rock moons.

The second planet from the primary is habitable by humans: a bit cool, with slightly higher surface gravity. 68% of the surface is covered by seas, of which nearly a third are frozen. The local day is 17.5 Terran hours long; two small moons move slowly across the night sky; the lcoal year is about 1.4 Terran years.

Only 1800 persons inhabit this world, in six widely-separated settlements; all are human or ara-human. Each of the settlements is governed by a powerful individual; most of the population are engaged in service to these Masters. Some are in fact bondsmen -- essentially slaves, certainly not allowed to leave the planet. Only one formal starport exists, but each of the settlements has space for ships to land nearby. The settlements, their masters and population, and the colors employed in their distinctive emblems, are as follows:

  • Village
    • population 1100 (890 slaves, 210 free); Lady Shelm, color red.
  • Vanity
    • population 80 (72 slaves, 8 free); Lord Alm, color blue.
  • Seeholm
    • population 300 (95 slaves, 205 free); Lord Anthony, the Seniormost, color brown.
  • Imago
    • population 160 (140 slaves, 20 free); Lady Karla, color yellow.
  • Chyre Farm
    • population 110 (30 slaves, 80 free); Lord Asgraa, color grey.
  • Florin
    • population 50 (none slaves); Lord Ralov, color black.

The six Masters form an oligarchy, controlling trade and contact. The planet produces only foodstuffs sufficient for its needs, and some artwork and handicrafts. Ships call at long intervals to sell high-tech goods to the Masters and some of the free population. Except for food, air and water, expect all other items to be very expensive.

Travelers have found the people of Lindesleed to be reserved and formal. The Masters, and some of the other free inhabitants, exhibit bio-energetic powers of various types. Records show this planet as being uninhabited as of 200 years ago; the Masters (or their recent ancestors) seem to have led a colonization effort.
