Thomas Jefferson "TJ" Daley is from the south side of Chicago & a near poverty-line African-American family. Living in 1960s, 70s and 80s Chicago is pretty rough; drug gangs are constantly at war.  Many people self-medicate with illegal street drugs.  Politicians & city workers are astoundingly corrupt. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Side,_Chicago  One brother died in a gang violence, another of an overdose. His father, a convenience store owner, was caught in a crossfire during a robbery.  Getting out of poverty & the endless cycle of debt was paramount. 

TJ did ROTC as Corpsman, while the US Army paid for his U Chicago education; he majored in pre-med/biology, He spent at least 2 tours with the Army where he was mostly over educated & under promoted; possibly a 1st Lt or Capt; He has never served overseas.

In the Army, he mostly performed checkup, intake evals, and basic preventitive med.  He re-upped for an additional 4 yrs.

His last 20th c gig was working w Cook County Social Services Urgent Care basically handling the gun-shot wounds & drug overdoses; he made good use of all that underused field comabt med training that he never used during his Army years. 

Meanwhile, he'd been doing med school pritzker.uchicago.edu/academics/md-curriculum as fast as he could pay for it.  (TBD decide how far along he'd gotten.   Maybe a 3rd year student rotating thru the various specialties? perhaps a 4th year working in emergency med? )

He has been doing Natl Guard service for the extra income and additional training, final rank Captain. 

After his mother, the last member of his immediate family, died of cancer in '85, he was recruited to join Morrow Proj. He was frozen c1986 recon team 99 in a disused mineshaft at Iron Mt, Michigan.

TJ smokes cigs & does too much vivarin & speed in order to work long hours & study. 

His musical tastes run to Motown & St Louis style jazz.
