Shapechange
Official Rules
All of the official rules for the Shapechange skill still apply. See p150 of the 5th Edition Gamemaster's Guide for details. In the wake of the Sub-Men Rising adventure, the 'Manra race only' restriction is lifted for some characters.
House Rules
Action Table Results
The Shapechange skill has no inherent difficulty ratings. A straight Action Table roll is required (WIL + Shapechange skill level) to transform into the known shape. For the non-Manra among you, a follow-up CON check is also needed. Placid, unhurried conditions are desirable for Shapechanging. Combat conditions add a -5 penalty. This penalty does not apply to characters with the Single-Minded quirk or who make a Full Success on a Meditation roll in the previous round. Multiple-action penalties also apply if the character would like to move or defend themselves at all.
Critical Success |
The character smoothly morphs into the target shape. |
Full Success |
The character transforms into the target shape, part by part, with many an odd intermediate stage visible along the way. |
Partial Success |
The character dissolves into a silvery pool. Additional attempts are made with a +5 bonus. |
Failure |
Nothing happens. |
Mishap |
Bad things happen. Example: The character dissolves into a silvery pool. Additional attempts are made with a -5 penalty. |
Time Required
Two full verses (14 breaths) are needed for a minimally successful check (an adjusted result of 11). One less breath is required for successively higher results. For example, a Shapechange would take only 5 breaths if the adjusted result was a 20 (20-11 = 9, 14-9 = 5 breaths). The minimum time needed is one breath, so adjusted results of 24 and up are treated the same.
