Illusion

House Rules

So far, there are no variations to the standard rules for the Illusion mode.

Notes and Discussions

  • Placing an Illusion on a moving target requires a check of the caster's Illusion Ration (MR+level).  This is modified by the size and relative speed of the target. Use the generic modifiers for target size and subtract the relative SPD of the caster and target.  PLAYERS: please proofread the example to doublecheck my use of rules.
    • Malgon the Mysterious (SPD 0) rounds a dark street corner in Zandu and is accosted by a footpad (SPD 1). Malgon's instincts send him running back around the corner (Retreat at half-movement rate), the footpad in hot pursuit (Advance at half-movement rate). The cagy mage tries placing Cascal's Illuminating Globe on the eyes of the thug, hoping to blind him and escape. Malgon has a Magic Rating of 6 and the Illusion Mode at level 4.
    • The spell itself is very basic, a simple visual Illusion of minimal magnitude lasting one minute, with movement allowed (Casting modifier = 1 + 3 = 4). Malgon does not have the Battle Magic Quirk, so he takes a -5 penalty for Multiple Actions (Retreating and casting). Malgon's player needs to roll a 10 or better (Full_Success - Illusion Rating + Casting Modifiers + Multiple_Action_Penalty = 11-10+4+5) to successfully cast this spell. The roll is a 12 and the spell goes off, but where does it land?
    • Targeting his opponent's eyes during combat will subtract 7 from his check. The referee decides the relative SPD of 1 is no concern because they are on the same course and moving half-speed. Malgon's player needs to roll a 13 or better (Full_Success - Illusion_Rating + Target_Penalty + Multiple_Action_Penalty = 11-10+7+5) to blind his foe. The roll is a 20: the globe lands precisely on the bridge of the Zandiran's nose.
    • As with all Illusions, the target has a chance to see this Globe for the phantom it is. The Zandiran must make a PERception Attribute Check versus the level of the Spell. The referee chooses to double the level of the spell since Malgon's player targeted it so well.  The referee must roll a 13 or better (Full_Success - 2*PER + 2*SL = 11 - 2*0 + 2*1) for the footpad to see anything[ Ref: is a Partial Success of any value versus Illusion? ]. The roll is a 16; the Zandiran manages to look past the Globe and continue the chase. The referee rules he must make additional PER checks each time he might trip or bump into an obstacle, due to his limited night vision.
