Following up on the clues found in the remnants of the re-re captured Silver Oak Caravan, our heroes headed off far to the North West to seek the hiding place of Esteya, the locale of Cadmus' dream. The various mercenaries were sent back with the caravan to bolster the escort of Eastmarch troopies.

We rode hard for days in a rain that varied from misty to heavy, but was (relatively) warm, at least for the season.

After several days, in the first week of Dekar, we drew nigh the enemy camp. Cadmus, Blix, and Dorothea, with Cadmus' Spirit "Hey You" snuck close enough to the camp to re-open communications with Esteya. A convoluted four-part game of "telephone" ensued. After a second round of sneaking and telephoning, a "plan" of sorts had been worked out.

Esteya was to produce a distraction sufficient to cover the approach of the heroes to the wall of the fort. She was also to attempt to introduce some Cliff Toad poison to the well, in hopes of cutting down on the number of foes we would face.

The heroes were told off in pairs for the no doubt confused battle to come.

 

  • Cadmus paired with Zatchel.
  • Bruno paired with Blix.
  • Chandra paired with Herrhejeen with the special task of archer suppression.
  • Conrad paired with Doddie, as required by Chapt. 3, para. 17, Clause XXIV, sub clause viii, Steel Brotherhood standard contract, C.U. 857
  • Pim paired with Mip, and her horse, and a spider.

Near the expected time, a tarpaulin "Puffed" up into sight of our heroes above the wall of the fort. Ill was boded when Bruno asked Dorothea -- "So, was that it?". Dorothea indicated in the affirmative, and the fight was on.

A spray of arrows felled the three guards manning the wall on the exposed side.

Cadmus, Conrad, and Pim started galloping towards the low spot on the wall (only 2 meters, with the ditch before looking fairly filled in).

Cadmus was first to the wall, where he encountered a brief difficulty gaining the top.

Conrad gained the top next, while Cadmus advanced down the back of the rammed earth wall, menacing a few mightily stoned young mages. One was shield bashed by Zatchel into the well, and one was darting about asking Cadmus if he was“Meskelito”.

Pim leaped her horse to the top of the wall, both ululating in fine barbarian style!

Bruno’s ascent of the wall was impeded by an impaling arrow in his leg.

Blix leapt from his horse to the wall with out slowing down.

Chandra and Herrhejeen standing in the ditch (really about 6 inches of mud and an inch or so of water, with knee to waist high reeds) began to lay down suppressive fire on the three archers on the right corner of the wall.

Zatchel dispatched a few of the guards, while Cadmus answered the stoned mage with extreme prejudice. Conrad moved up on Cadmus’ right, attacking some guards and menacing some mage students. He exploited his extra menacing appearance by calling on all before him to lay down their weapons and repent of their wicked ways. Chandra suppressed an archer to the point where he began to rethink his career choices. The other two archers tried to suppress her, but only hit her for significant damage. Bruno gained the top of the wall, slowed by a Healing VI and a nasty limp.

A menacing “whoosh”ing sound started coming from around the left flank, just out of sight of the heroes.

Cadmus ran full tilt into the wall of the “keep”, and then a young mage ran past. Conrad continued to call for immediate surrender as Blix moved up on his right. Pim rode along the top of the wall, dealing discouraging injuries and death to those who stood there. Bruno moved to cover in the fort, bowling over a mage in the process. Chandra shot at one of the other archers, missed, and knocked down the palisade he was taking cover behind!

Cadmus turned hard right and ran across the back of the guards fighting Conrad, while the speedy mage turned right and ran out of sight. Zatchel dispatched Sgt. Evil. “I tol’ ‘im, dragging ‘is pommel in third parry’d be the death of ‘im someday, Zur.” Blix fumbles (actually “Charm Person”, them sneaky little magelings) a hard Nagi shot into the back of Conrad, happily doing relatively little damage. Bruno moves on the wall archers, pushing a magette before him. Chandra climbs the wall as Herrhejeen covers her, and snipes the rapidly faltering archers. One of the guards chooses his moment and runs up the wall, leaps off, and splashes through the ditch towards freedom!

Cadmus is cut down by a backhand blow as he runs across the guards rear. He keeps moving his feet with creditable speed, even when down.

Meanwhile, out of sight to all but Pim, Esteya has mustered her “cool kids clique”, and here air elemental and is headed for the Captain’s Quarters. Pim pursues based upon MoFoni racial memory, as a dog would a car full of mailmen. Bruno finishes his charge of the archers, stabbing one in the leg. The other one surrenders to Chandra’s beaten sheaf. Conrad and Doddie take down the captain in an epic fight.

Cadmus, Zatchel, and Blix lie, broken and bleeding, among the bodies of their opponents. Esteya manages to convince Pim not to kill her.

As the fight is ending, the rain gives up and the sun starts to shine on our heroes for the first time in over a week. The improving light reveals the havoc let loose on this decrepit way station. Mages are being noisily sick in the courtyard. Guards sob and beg for aid.

Herrhejeen screams a curse in Sindarin, and a large war dart buries itself at Chandra's feet. We look to Herrhejeen and see her pointing upwards. We look upwards and see, sailing through the clearing sky, a wyvern! We curse and try to remember where our missile weapons are, right now, as Chandra’s Befuddle and a fat Lightning Bolt race towards the Wyvern Rider!!! The lighting bolt strikes the rider a heartbeat before the befuddle does. That’s spell coordination, laddie, and they couldn’t even see each other at the time! Kids these days, you tell them things like this, but do they belive it? The wyvern-riders' leg falls to the ground.

The befuddled rider and fewmet streaming wyvern turn away from this suddenly too-dangerous rendezvous. The wyvern struggles to gain precious altitude, and the safety of the clouds.

Chandra will none of it. She nocks an arrow and bends her mighty bow. She whispers a prayer to the gods that sounds suspiciously like “Hey! Uncle Jian! Watch THIS!”. Her arrow flies to the same piece of air as the wyvern, and onwards -- while the wyvern glides at a very inefficient ratio to the earth.

Blix and Chandra each race to the scene of the accident, screaming “MINE! IT'S MINE! I SAW IT FIRST!”

The wyvern’s ability to fly and breathe have been quite spoilt by solid contact with the ground from over 50 meters up. The handsome, blond wyvern rider's good looks have been quite spoilt by solid contact with the back of the wyvern’s head. Both commence to push up metaphorical daisies, post haste.

The two escaped guards are soon rounded up, in part by Estaya flying over the area saying, “It will be dark soon. You are all alone, and out in the Pale! You will live longer with us!” Blix makes short work of skinning the wyvern, and consults with Bruno and Cadmus as to the best way to preserve the skin for tanning. Blix reserves several prime cuts of wyvern for himself, in anticipation of an “A” in his mail order home verminology course.

The wounded are restored to a semblance of health.

The new raft of prisoners is questioned, along the lines of the caravan guards. Bruno is going to get his list laminated once we get back to Eastmarch!

 You find yourselves in a wrecked fort, recently made habitable, and now not so habitable, after the Air Elemental, the Toad Sick, and some battle

 

Generally, the Mercs were recruited 1st, and spent time setting up the fort, running supplies, etc. All done via HellWalk. Then most went back and helped gather Sorcerers, some of whom were kept in town, other joined 'en route. Then the gang HellWalked near here. Been waiting mostly since.

 
The aftermath of the Fight at the Staging Area- 
 I’m assuming that you:
 
(a) separate the prisoners, do a pat-down search, separate them from their goodies (Sgt. Crick will strongly suggest that each person have a separate pile for their stuff- “It’s sounding like some of these folk might-ways be friends if we treat ‘em right, so we’d not want to go pilferin’ right off, and we’d want to be able to give our new Chums their own back. Anyway, one of the cleaver lads or lasses can also look over their piles and get a hint that their truthful…or not”);
 
(b) use the folks that Esteya identifies as “friendlies” for corroboration of individual stories as well as an additional security element (armed but watched by a few of your own). The names you will get will be from them, as well as cross-corroboration other Mercs and Elementalists; and,
 
(c) run up a detect Magic Spell or several over the goods and folks. More might be found by those making some good Spot Hidden Rolls (or even with simply successful Spot Hidden rolls allied with a successful Concealment roll).

Overall, a Martial Caste Jommjeen of grizzled, tough & sinwy appearance. Cause of Death: Cadmus’ and/or Bruno’s blades. Improved Open Helm (AR 26), Plate- Cuirass (AR 27), tassets, greeves & right vambrace, left vambrace is curbiolli. All covered with Siege/Winter Bush pattern camo. Someone with Armoring or Smithing skill (or similar Lore) may make a skill roll. Slightly broken RA pattern Heater, MW 83- a Kingdom pattern bastardsword of reddish merrick steel carved w/ a pair of Arcane Runes, has black Kingdom Pattern guards & grip of silvery wire, pommel is of grey metal, and shaped to look like the head of an old bearded man of uncertain race w/ long, shaggy, very tight ringlets, belt has nice black sheath, small Field Medical Kit, medium wallet, and medium purse w/ well-used tamper evident “Screamer” re-usable seal (10L, 36S, 1D).
 
Capt. Josef Kaltwell           (10th Legion (ret.)) TyrMal late 20’s (Steel & Sapphire) SIZ 17. Overall goods, grooming, and gear gives an appearance of a certain elegance and tendency to display verging on the ostentatious for a Martial Caste Tyr. Cause of Death: various forms of penetrative, blunt, and electrical trauma. Dressed in traveling leathers/ arming clothes. A very fancy belt w/ matching scabbard for a bastard sword, a large dagger (still in its matching sheath), and a matching loop hanger with a finely made horseman’s mace hanging in it. A large wallet, and a medium purse w/ well-used tamper evident “Screamer” re-usable seal (19L, 50S, 1D, & 1shiny P). Besides the usual gear appropriate to his station, the wallet contains some high quality sorcerers’ ritual gear and supplies, as well as P-150: a flat 1L bottle of thick green glass, wrapped in braided leather w/ a threaded wooden stopper that tightens over the neck of the bottle (sealing with a leather washer) and forms a dosage cup. Contains 600 ml of a thin black liquid with a slight scent of mint. Around his neck he has GJ 131- Necklace of heavy silver chain w/ 5 plaques strung at the center. The plaques are inlaid with flat ivory and turquoise stones, very fine and fanciful network of whorlly lines are engraved into the necklace and plaques.
 
Don Burch (aka “Mescilito) (ValMal, early 20’s, Dusky skinned, shaved head, brown eyes), slightly husky of build for a Val. By his clothing, grooming, and style, likely a low- middlin level Landsfolk Caste sort. 1st Rank Sorceror, 1st Rank mage. Cause of Death: Annoyed someone by acting strange and suffered Unblunt Trauma. No gear, weapons, or purse.
 
Sam Pina (ValMal, late teens or early 20s, sturdy build, long Steel hair, wispy beard). Dead of no visible reason. By his gear, clothing, grooming, and style, likely a low- level Landsfolk Caste sort. (maybe) 1st Rank Sorcerer. Leather and Curboilli armor in Siege/Winter Brush cammo. Broadsword and parrying dagger. Large wallet and small purse (2L, 6S, 9D). The wallet contains some basic sorcerers’ gear, a real fine calligraphy set, some very nice carving tools, and some other gear that Estaya is not sure about: it doesn’t look like traditional sorcerers’ props & tools (spools of fine threads & yarns of unknown animal hair, a small (150ml off-white ceramic jar of golden-colored paste (P- 152)), but is of uniform high quality, carefully stored, and organized for easy access. Also, an exotic hardwood stick carefully carved w/ some very tiny glyphs, and GJ-132 a lead bracelet heavily carved with tiny abstract work.
 
Reuben Langfor Mean Bastard of a Merc (Martial Caste, likely a Jomjeen, HilMal, big dude, late 20’s) from town named Delmita in Dragonstooth Range. Dead of Assorted Trauma. Winter Eastmarch camo pattern Brigandine, improved open helm, fine kingdom pattern broadsword of grey merrick steel, parrying dagger, Nagga-Notta, medium comp bow, GJ 132- heavy gold ring with red stone, medium wallet (carving tools, calligraphy set (both decent hobby-ist level quality), the normal run of toiletry items, otherwise partly stuffed with locks of different-colored hair, each tied with a silk ribbon, and each with a cryptic hemp-paper tag that appears to be dates and places as well as odd notations (sometime names or nicknames, sometimes descriptions), (strung out over the last 5 years, starting less-frequently and getting more frequent over time), medium purse (9L, 16S, 19D) w/ cheap screamer sigil.

Seems like a pretty butch mage for this crew, poss relatively new to sorcery, tho. You are less than 100% sure about his backstory, as he tended to be vague, but several folks seemed to know him, or of him, from Kulwad area- something about a reversal of fortune recently)
