The Hand of Jehovah

A radical religious sect and society, based in Washington, dedicated to uniting the peoples of the Northwest under the banner of God. The majority of its subjects live simple lives, shunning much of the technology of the Ancient world. The Templars (the military arm of the sect) is fervently (and violently) converting unbelievers. Their symbol is a cross; the Templars place a red hand symbol upon it.

Origin

Pre-War

A mix of survivalist groups and rural communities, many of which had a fundamentalist Christian element.

Post-War

There was not much contact, or opportunity for strife, during the Long Winter. In 2040, the United Combine had formed as an umbrella organization for various surviving communities in central Washington state and the Willamette valley in Oregon; but within a few years tensions in the Combine tore it apart.

  •      The Purists wanted to purge people who showed signs of deviant behavior, or those with mutations; they also advocated segregating communities by their ethnic heritage. The PC were, in a nutshell, racists.

  •      The Hand of Jehovah wanted to require churches in every community, and strict adherence to their strange version of fundamentalist Christianity.

  •      The Free Peoples Militia represented the faction focused on rebuilding society and trade.

The so-called Convention of the Remnants, in 2050, was the last time the various communities attempted to work together. The Free Peoples Militia claimed the leadership of the United Combine -- since the Hand of Jehovah and the Purity Corp had stormed out. Within a few months, communities within the former Combine were raiding each other -- the War of the Remnants had begun, and continues to this day.

The Hand of Jehovah have mostly been expanding east, into Idaho and Montana.

What Outsiders Know

Within the Northwest, and in the Mountain States, the Hand are preceived as a ruthless society, spreading aggressively from the Northwest. Established members believe they are following God's will. Their army is the Templars; their most feared agents are the Crusaders.

The Reality

The Church of the Remnants, technically. More than that the team hasn't found out, yet.

Population

     More to come.

Territory and Locations

Their headquarters is the mountain community of Enoch (formerly Omak), in northeastern Washington state. The more "settled" communities under the church are all along the Okanogan River, or in the wide farming lands south of the Columbia River. Recent expansion and "conversion" missions have been focussed to the east.

Enoch

Population about 2,000. Headquarters of the Hand of Jehovah. Formerly Omak and Okanogan. There's a large lumber mill here. US Route 97 runs through the town.

Coulee City

     Population 500

Ephrata

     Population 300

Moses Lake

     Population 1,000

Organization

Government, National and Local

The Hand of Jehovah has a military and policing arm:  the Templars. Templars see themselves as the instruments of God's will on Earth. In addition, Crusaders travel beyond the borders of Hand territory, bringing the word of God and scouting communities that seem fit for conversion by the Templars. Crusaders are very skilled and tough. A smaller organization, the Inquisitors, act as political and moral police, seeking out blasphemy, immorality, and other social troubles.

Justice, Social Control, Punishment

Punishments for blasphemy are usually burning at a stake. Branding (with an upside-down cross) and banishment are among the terrible punishments for other crimes.

Political Factions, Dissent

     More to come.

Famous/Infamous Persons

The current leader is named Solomon; members of the Hand consider him to be a prophet. Outsiders consider him to be a fanatical lunatic. He wears plate armor and carries a large sword, when in public or in battle. He has multiple wives.

Solomon's son Isaac commands the Templars.

Relationships with Other Groups

Solomon realizes that the Hand of Jehovah doesn't have the strength yet to challenge the Combine or the Purity Corp -- the War of the Remnants has been mostly a "cold war" for several decades.

The Hand doesn't really have friendly relations with any other groups. Bone City, however, is seen as entirely evil, to be wiped from the face of the Earth someday.

Culture

Ethnic Groups, Emigration and Emigration

Social Divisions and Castes

     More to come.

Religion, Beliefs and Superstition

The demon "Scrag" is mentioned as part of the cause of the War. Technology and science are viewed as major causes of the War, carrying the "taint of Scrag"; anything beyond about Civil War technology is blasphemy (unless you have a dispensation).

Equipment and Resources

Economy

The Hand does not allow private enterprise; it's a theocratic socialist state, in some ways. Food, shelter, medical care, and so forth are provided by the Hand of Jehovah.

New converts have to suffer through a few months of indoctrination before they receive full benefits. During this period, they wear sandals and plain robes, to mark their status.

 Science, Medicine and Technology

     More to come.

Weapons and Military Equipment

     More to come.

Communications

Vehicles

The Hand doesn't use motor vehicles. Horses and horse-drawn wagons are common.

Aircraft

     None of that.

Watercraft

     More to come.
