The Buro uv Taktikool Manijmint, aka the Buro
The United Nations is an organization of scientific masterminds and political tyrants by 2056. They have managed, by capturing the feng shui sites of their era, to turn the UN from an ineffectual meeting place for diplomats into an authoritarian world government. The world of 2056 is one massive police state, a drab and dreary place where the everyday movements of citizens are constantly monitored and tightly controlled. The Secretary-General of the UN is Johann Bonengel; the UN headquarters is in Geneve.
Their control of feng shui is possible by the arcanowave theory; it allows the identification and control of millions of feng shui sites without relying on agents to actually occupy the sites. In addition, they can manipulate magical chi energy through technological means.
Along with their stranglehold on the Juncture's feng shui, the UN leaders keep a tight rein on their people through the use of arcanowave technology. It has allowed the UN to create the Abominations, supernatural creatures who have been cybernetically altered to turn them into obedient (usually) and terrifying (always) super-soldiers. The UN regularly sends teams into the Demon Juncture to capture more creatures for this purpose.
Some mysterious cabal or group promoted the formation of arcanowave theory in about 2010 AD. According to Fat Albert, it would be the usual Masons, Skull-and-Bones types, Jewish bankers, the Catholic Church, etc. Keep in mind that Albert has his own prejudices ... In any case, the development of arcanowave became tied to the increasingly powerful United Nations -- or, the United Nations became increasingly powerful after harnessing the power of positive feng shui.
In 2025, the UN was restructured to include a standing military force of its own. This army, the Bureau of Tactical Management, became the tool by which the rich, industrialized nations imposed their will on the Third World. As tensions increased between the haves and the have-nots, the UN shifted its role from troubleshooter to occupying power, and was the dominant military force on Earth by 2030.
Heavy casualties in these "peace-keeping missions" were still unacceptable to the First World; robots, cyborg soldiers, and cyborg primates were all tried experimentally, but failed for one reason or another. In 2042 the first Abominations were seen on the battlefield -- presented to the public as genetic constructions.
The Abominations, monsters of old reinforced by the latest in killing technology, were brutal in combat and highly demoralizing to the enemy. The military successes scored by Abomination-backed UN forces were impressive. The rebellious nations of the Third World surrendered to the UN, especially after the BTM instituted a policy of directly attacking enemy heads of state with Abomination assassination squads. The UN took control of the local positive feng shui sites, and soon the Third World began to see the UN as their natural leadership.
One of the UNs policies in regards to the conquered nations was the imposition of a simplified version of English -- Globish.
The UN then began a program of taking control of positive feng shui sites in the industrialized nations, as well. By 2045, the remaining countries renounced their sovereignity, making the UN the legal authority of a new world government. The few remaining Resistance movements were destroyed, with the exception of the Jammers (who could retreat through the Demon Juncture to other places, beyond the UN's reach).
In 2046, this future world moved into phase with the current Junctures. The UN, extremely efficient at surveillance, soon noticed the portals, and for several years was sending recon teams through the gates. More recently, they have begun attempting to take control of positive feng shui sites in the other Junctures.
Officially, of course, the Earth's population knows nothing about the Demon Juncture, the true origin of the Abominations; nor about the gates to other Junctures; and knowledge of feng shui is carefully controlled (and officially described as superstitious nonsense).
Abominations
Each abomination is implanted with a Cerebral Grepper, a device that causes an instant brain hemorrhage if it knowingly disobeys the orders of a superior officer. The Buro tends to lose Abominations every so often, because they have low impulse control and sometimes lash ouot at their officers anyway.
They are enormous humanoids with monstrous features and gleaming metal implants. They don't all look alike, and come in a variety of "flesh" colors: red, green and purple are common. Some have horns, others are covered with coarse hair, bubbling blemishes, or other repulsive features.
STR 36, DEX 18, CON 36, SIZ 36, INT 12, APP 5, POW 24*, EDU 6. Hit points 36. Damage bonus +3d6. Move 8. Weapons: fist/punch 50%, 1d3 + db; kick 40%, 1d6 + db; bite 50%, 1d4 + half db; Arcanowave Devices 50%; Rifle 50%; Pistol 50%. Armor: 8 points, plus "inevitable comeback": return to life 2 rounds later on a successful CON x 2% roll, with only 5 Hit Points -- only once per day. Skills: Martial Arts 50%, Sneak 30%, Spot Hidden 40%, Arcanowave Operation 40%. Equipment: Juicer, Spirit Shield Generator, Buro Godhammer pistol, Buro Hellharrower rifle. (*the POW of an Abomination is used at 1/4 value for any kind of Luck rolls or other "good fortune" checks.)
