The Morrow Project in the Arcadian Republic

Page history last edited by Michael 6 years, 11 months ago

back to the R101 Reports page

This is a rather bald list-based summary of a narrative book. It's written in 20th Century French, hardbound in 120 pages, written by Jacqueline Gale of team R-35, and published in 2059 AD. The Arcadian Republic archives contain the author's notes, a handwritten English-language manuscript, and some unpublished material.

Le Projet Morrow et la République Arcadienne - Une Histoire

  • Team Eta:  this eight-person team had been frozen in 1986 (the same year as team R101, though not in the same training cohort). In 2010, twenty-one years after the Atomic War, the seals on Depot Eta (Granite Island) failed, and Team Eta was automatically awakened. The entire lake had been frozen over for several years; the team had to travel over the ice with their ATVs, Albatross hovercraft, and some sleds. Fairly soon they found themselves at the Soo locks, which was one of their primary objectives. The team members were:

    • Daniel H. Weissman, age 43, mechanical engineer, team leader. Died age 59 of cancer, 2026 AD.

    • Matthew M. Siple, age 40, diver. Died of wounds during rescue of kidnap victims, age 43, 2013 AD.

    • Ryan A. Miller, age 36, diver/machinist. Died in diving accident, age 44, 2018 AD.

    • Robert L. Motz, age 34, marine engineer. Died in construction accident, age 39, 2015 AD.

    • Ernest A. Gates, age 30, diver/driver/boat crew. Died in explosion during ambush, age 35, 2015 AD. Remains not recovered.

    • Michael F. Suarez, age 29, boat crew/machinist. Died of old age (apparently Alheimer's), age 61, 2042 AD. Has descendants.

    • Oliver B. Moran, age 28, diver/machinist. Died in explosion during ambush, age 32, 2015 AD. Remains not recovered.

    • Rebecca G. Martin, age 27, doctor. Died of exposure while traveling in Ontario, age 59, 2042 AD.

Initial ages are given as of when they entered hibernation.

The team had initially four 7m rigid inflatable boats for utility work, a fusion-powered LCM-8, two amphibious ATVs, an Albatross scout hovercraft, a fusion powered dive support boat, and lots of pontoon system components (4 outboard motors, 4 pilothouses, 4 fusion generators, etc.).

They eventually emptied out three caches from their own list:

    • MI-15:  on the western side of the Keewenaw Peninsula, built into a cliff overlooking the lake. This maritime cache contained a pontoon.

    • MI-16:  near Four Mile Rock, MI, on the shore of Lake Superior, 5.6 km northeast of Ontonagon, MI. Maritime cache, contained a pontoon.

    • WI-10:  300 meters southeast of Sand Point, on the Wisconsin shore of Lake Superior, in the Apostle Islands Maritime Cliffs Natural Area. Maritime cache, contained a pontoon.

They had three other caches, which they never visited:

    • ME-5:  non-standard, Engineering-oriented, on the Atlantic coast

    • NC-03:  "standard", on the Atlantic coast in the Pamlico Sound

    • GA--03:  "standard", on the Atlantic coast at the Safilla River, near St. Andrew Sound

Three Morrow Project teams found Team Eta because of radio contact:

  • Recon team R-83, in central Wisconsin, entered hibernation 1984, was awakened due to a bolthole malfunction in 2012, and managed to tunnel out from under 6 meters of snow. They soon heard radio signals from Team Eta, and joined up with them. At least one of their caches was emptied out and brought to Soo. Their vehicle was a V-150 APC, which is no longer functional (suspension, tires, and electric motor all unrepairable by now). They emptied four of their caches.

    • Candida M. Rhodes, age 31, doctor, team leader. Died of an unknown disease, not treatable with Project medicines, age 44, 2025 AD.

    • Tracy M. Nguyen, age 30, metallurgical engineer. Died due to poisoned alcohol, age 38, 2020 AD.

    • Mark J. MacDonald, age 29, oceanographer. Died of drowning, age 31, 2014 AD.

    • Jeremy L. Bennett, age 27, engineer. Died of old age, age 66, 2051 AD. Has descendants.

    • Michael M. Provencher, age 26, scout (Army veteran), historian. Died of wounds, age 28, 2014 AD. Remains not recovered.

The unvisited caches were:

    • TX-08

    • LA-02

  • Recon team R-77, at a bolthole in central Minnesota. Vehicle was a V-150 with 20mm turret, five person crew; they entered hibernation in 1984. Their bolthole began flooding in 2015, the team was automatically awakened. They proceeded to the Great Lakes and made contact with Team Eta. Two of their caches (in Minnesota) were emptied, and at least one was destroyed. Their vehicle was destroyed in a fire circa 2030 (though the burnt-out hull still exists at Soo).

    • Kenneth M. Trottier, age 34, electrical engineer, team leader. Died in an industrial accident, age 29, 2020 AD.

    • Kenneth B. Johnson, age 34, physical therapist. Died of heart failure, age 45, 2026 AD.

    • Thomas M. Brown, age 27, scout (Army veteran), photojournalist. Died of wounds, age 28, 2016 AD.

    • Glenn A. Salas, age 25, physicist. Died of cancer, age 61, 2051 AD. Has descendants.

    • Michael S. Austin, age 23, computer programmer. Disappeared, age 29, 2021 AD. The published summary is vague about what happened.

There are three caches possibly intact:

    • GA-01

    • CA-16

    • AZ-5

  • Science team S-87, in northern Ohio. Their vehicle was a stretch V-150 with a cupola mount; 8 man crew, entered hibernation in 1984. Their bolthole was underwater for an unknown amount of time, when the automated systems decided to wake up the crew in 2021. 3 of the cryoberths malfunctioned during hibernation; the 5 survivors managed to get themselves and their vehicle out from under water and ice. They heard the Team Eta radio broadcasts within a couple of weeks, and joined them in Soo. No mention is available in the paper records of what happened to their caches, or their locations. Their vehicle was eventually stripped for the cupola and weapon, water filters, electric motor, reactor, radio, computer, tires, and spare parts; the hull still exists at Soo. The survivors were:

    • Brian W. Criswell, age 36, epidemiologist, team leader. Died of wounds during sea battle, age 38, 2023 AD.

    • David S. Pickett, age 27, electronics technician. Died in industrial accident, age 41, 2035 AD. Has descendants.

    • Chester G. Parr, age 30, machinist. Died of cancer, age 44, 2035 AD.

    • Patrick C. Sharp, age 25, surgical nurse. Disappeared, probably kidnapped, age 39 at that time, 2035 AD.

    • Nancy M. Ramirez, age 25, mechanical engineer. Died of old age, age 60, 2056 AD. Has descendants.

Two Morrow Project teams found Team Eta while traveling, due to rumors and word-of-mouth:

  • Recon Team R-25:  in West Virginia. Their vehicle was a V-150 with 20mm turret. Their bolthole collapsed during a rainstorm in 2018, and the crew were automatically awakened. One of the cryoberths had failed during hibernation; the four survivors were unable to recover their vehicle while escaping the bolthole. They set out on foot; one of them was killed in a gunfight with aggressive locals after a week. After two months of travel, they heard about Team Eta from traveling merchants, and found their way to Soo. All three were suffering from radiation exposure. Apparently none of their caches were ever emptied; their AutoNav and MP Computer were destroyed or self-destructed during the escape from the bolthole, and they didn't remember the locations with sufficient information to find them. The three survivors:

    • Carl M. Marquez, age 37, English major, Army veteran, team leader. Died of cancer, age 41, 2022 AD.

    • Keith L. Shryock, age 32, lawyer, Air Force veteran. Died of self-inflicted gunshot wound, age 35, 2021 AD.

    • Jerome M. Ide, age 25, computer programmer. Died of heart failure, age 41, 2034 AD.

  • Recon Team R-67:  in a Commando scout with 2 crew. Bolthole automatically activated due to the 2020 eruption of Yellowstone Caldera; one cryoberth had malfunctioned, but the survivor escaped and headed east (to avoid the clouds of ash, etc.). After a few months of travel, he arrived at Soo on a merchant ship. Caches UT-02, WY-11, and CO-5 are buried under meters of ash; one was in California (CA-12), and one was in Alabama (AL-07), which are both Commando-Scout focused. The vehicle still exists at Soo, but the tires are deteriorated, the electric motor and armament stripped for salvage, etc. The survivor was:

    • James A. Lee, age 37, staffing coordinator, Army veteran, team leader. Disappeared while on a scouting mission in Illinois, age 44 at that time, 2027 AD.

A final Morrow Project team reached the Arcadian Republic in 2048:

  • Recon Team R-35; vehicle was a V-150 with 20mm turret; 5 crew. Their Wyoming bolthole activated for unknown reasons ("failure") in 2047, and the team had to dig out through meters of volcanic ash -- their vehicle could not be recovered. They spent a year heading east, towards the Great Lakes; three of them were killed in combat. The two survivors joined up with Team Eta in 2048, at which time only three other Morrow Project members will still living in the Republic.

They wrote down the locations of their six caches, but none were visited by the team.  WY-12 was buried under ash; neither they nor any of the Team Eta staff made any attempt to visit caches SD-8 (in the Black Hills), CO-4, AZ-4, AZ-10, or TX-18.

The two survivors who made contact with Team Eta were:

    • Willie D. Filler, age 27, MBA. Died of injuries due to vehicle accident, age 31, 2051 AD.

    • Jacqueline G. Cale, age 26, author. Died of cancer, age 38, 2059 AD. Last known surviving member of the Morrow Project in the Great Lakes area. Has descendants.

The author claims that Team Eta also made radio contact with some other Morrow Project teams between 2011 and 2015.

The Project graveyard at Soo has 24 graves ... since several bodies were not recovered. Half a dozen of the Morrow people who made it to Soo had children there, including two women (if there's any question about Project drugs or cryosleep causing infertility).
