Their vehicle was the assault version of the SK-5.
The team leader was frozen, and the bolthole closed, in October of 1987. None of the team members had ever met each other before the team was frozen.
In December of 2140 the bolthole was discovered and opened by R-101. The cryoberths of Osborn and Washington had failed decades before; Myers was not revived for some reason.
Standing Orders
You expect to be awakened a very few years after the War.
The goal of the Project is the continued survival of human civilization after the War. The standing orders for every team are to:
The team leader probably knew some things about MARS teams in the Great Lakes area, number of depots, etc.
All the team members know that the Project has large amounts of "reconstruction supplies" stashed in various places.
In essence the plan is: Recon teams will scout around, mapping the good and bad things; MARS teams suppress some of the bad things, Science teams look into and solve the other bad things.
Facilities
Their bolthole was in Michigan, near the town of Pentwater (Oceana county), under a faux toxic waste disposal structure. The front hatch hinges at the top; the first time it's opened a pair of powerful gas generator pistons can push the ~100 tons of dirt out of the way (it's mostly gravel, actually). There is an electric motor which can open and close the hatch afterwards. A vertical escape trunk, and a "back door", allow the team to leave the bolthole without opening the main hatch.
The interior is 14.2 meters wide, 17.5 meters long, and 5 meters tall (and thus over 1200 cubic meters of air volume). The main door is 8.5 meter wide, 4.9 meters tall, and 10 cm thick (armor value 42); it is steel, and weighs 32 tons. Examining it on-site, it was clearly welded together from three separate panels.
For security purposes, they only knew the location of their own bolthole and of their team's six supply caches. Keep in mind that the Project might have to change the team's location, vehicles, equipment, or even membership after they'd entered cryosleep.
A US Coast Guard SK-5 sank in November of 1971 about 3 km northwest of Martin's Reef Light. It's still there (45° 57' .2 N, 84° 07' .9 W, upside down in 33 meters of water.
Unlike the Recon teams, MARS teams knew the (planned) contents of most of their caches. The caches were:
-
MI05: MARS cache, contains supplies for SK-5 repair. 7 km southeast of Traverse City, MI.
-
NY03: a general MARS cache; on the Lake Erie shore
-
OH06: a general MARS cache, near Put-In-Bay, Ohio (on South Bass Island, in Lake Erie)
-
WI05: a general MARS cache, in cliffs at Cave Point, near Jacksonport, Wisconsin (on the Door Peninsula)
-
ID08: south of Twin Falls, Idaho
-
TX03: south of Odessa, Texas
Equipment
The team has typical MARS person equipment: a PASGT helmet with black Resistweave cover; a Resistweave armored vest; and an encryption module for their radios. The vehicle and "team" equipment is listed here.
Radio Frequencies
The team is assigned ten FM voice communication frequencies:
-
channel 1: 31.1 MHz - Zone 8 common tactical channel
-
channel 2: 31.1 MHz - team primary channel
-
channel 3: 34.8 MHz
-
channel 4: 36.6 MHz
-
channel 5: 37.5 MHz
-
channel 6: 33.0 MHz - also MARS general
-
channel 7: 41.2 MHz
-
channel 8: 41.3 MHz
-
channel 9: 45.0 MHz
-
channel 10: 47.9 MHz
A couple of other important FM channels:
Note that changing these frequencies on their PRC-68 radios will require a successful Electronics skill roll if your skill is less than 40%; a failed roll (especially a fumbled roll) will result in channels not being usable. The PRC-70 vehicle/backpack radio is much more flexible; the HF band covers a lot of aircraft and marine channels, though it requires a long antenna to be really useful.
HF channels to watch:
-
2.182 MHz: international distress and emergency
-
7.0 to 7.3 MHz: the "long range" channels for the Project (one for each Zone, plus a couple of general purpose channels)
-
14.06 MHz: a common amateur radio channel
-
26.617 MHz: Civil Air Patrol common channel
-
26.96 to 27.41 MHz: CB radios on 40 channels. CB channel 11 (general calls) is 27.085 MHz; channel 9 (emergencies) is 27.065 MHz
-
27.87, 27.92, 27.97 MHz: US Navy-MARS (Military Affiliate Radio System)
