22nd Centuiry USMC Vehicles

Page history last edited by Michael 6 years, 6 months ago

back to the Index, or to Post-Apocalyptic Vehicles, or the United States

These all run on alcohol, and are very susceptible to fires. The hovercraft have fairly poor range.

USMC ATV

driver + passenger, 6x6 all-terrain vehicle. 1.9 liter water-cooled 4-cylinder alcohol-burning engine produces 80 HP; it can climb a 45 degree slope. Top speed is 60 kph; it has a 60 liter fuel tank, and uses 3 to 6 liters per hour (it's not really useful to rate it in "liters per 100 kilometers"). There is also a 5 liter oil tank, and roughly another 10 liters of various lubricants in the differentials, the automatic transmission, gearboxes, hydraulic system, etc.; there's also 10 liters of water in the cooling system. The front two axles are steered, and the left and right side wheels can be separately braked by the driver, giving a minimum turning circle of 5 meters diameter. It's got a 12 volt electric system, headlights, a horn, a hydraulic winch (1800 kg strength), bilge pumps, and a military trailer hitch. The wheels are 31.5x15.5 4-ply tubeless low-pressure. The only armor is a 5mm thick steel belly plate. Width 2 meters across the wheels; height 2 meters; length 3.4 meters, weight empty 1.8 tons, plus a normal load of 1 ton, or an overload cargo of 1.4 tons. The load platform is 1.4 meters by 1.9 meters, and can carry 8 troops. The vehicle can ford about 0.9 meters depth; in theory it floats with a driver and 300 kg load, but the freeboard is very limited, and the Marine Corps discourages amphibious operation. A one ton capacity trailer weighs 0.3 tons.

Besides the basic ATV, there are versions with a 1000 liter fuel tank fitted; a radio shelter body; and a 4-stretcher casevac body. The basic version can have a machine gun mounted on the rollover bow (for use by troops riding in the cargo area), or a ring mount over the passenger seat.

USMC hover jeep

example shown has fiberglass cover and rear window on the cargo bed

driver + passenger, jump seat in the rear cargo area for 2 passengers. 2.05 meters wide, 3.42 meters long. Empty weight 600 kilograms, max weight 800 kilograms. Lift engine power 7 kilowatts, lift fan diameter 0.6 meter. About  400 of all types are in service, including more than a hundred in non-military organizations.

USMC hover truck

various cabs and bodies; with bench seating in back it can haul 12 troops.  3.35 meters wide, 6.44 meters long. Empty weight 4500 kilograms, maximum weight 7000 kilograms. Engine is a 9 cylinder radial of about 900 horsepower. Hard or soft top cabs for one or two man crew, or with ring-mounted machine gun; versions include flatbed/stakebed, military cargo with bench seats, van body, tank body, etc. None with cranes or towing equipment however. About 200 of all types are in service.

USMC hover scout

light armored vehicle, with driver, gunner/commander, and seats for 4 scouts. Fitted with lightweight remote turret; plus all scouts have roof hatches. 3.08 meters wide, 6.05 meters long.Engine is a 9 cylinder radial of about 900 horsepower. Empty weight 4000 kilograms, max weight 6000 kilograms. Armor 13mm in front, 6.4mm sides, rear and top. Only about 50 of these are in service.

Armor values:  18 points front, 14 points sides, rear and top.

USMC hover carrier

light armored personnel carrier, with driver and seats for up to 10 passengers. Fitted with remote turret or (more often) a commander's cupola, mounting a  heavy machine gun. 3.1 meters wide, 6.5 meters long. Empty weight 4000 kilograms, max weight 6000 kilograms. Engine is a 9 cylinder radial of about 900 horsepower. Armor 13mm in front, 6.4mm sides, rear and top. Variants exist, including command vehicle, cargo transport, mortar carrier, or ambulance. About 500 of these are in service with the Marine Corps.

Armor values:  18 points front, 14 points sides, rear and top.

USMC hover tank

armored fighting vehicle, with driver, gunner, and commander. Engine is an 1800 horsepower (de-rated) 18 cylinder radial. Turret is armed with 105mm L/52 cannon plus fixed coaxial machine gun, quad missile box, and six-pack smoke/frag mortar, plus pintle-mounted medium or heavy machine gun over commander's hatch. Length 10.4 meters, width 6.7 meters (armored hull width is only 2.8 meters). Max weight 12 tons. Armor thickness varies from 45mm (front) to 25mm (sides and rear) to 13mm (hull and turret top). A few variants have been produced, with different weapons in the turret, or with no turret at all. There are currently 80 of these in service with the Marine Corps.

Armor values:  28 points front, 23 points sides and rear, 18 points from above.
