Post Apocalyptic Bikes

All of these are operated with the Drive Bike skill. They use (except the bicycle) petrochemical fuels -- two-cycle mix, or gasoline, or even diesel in a few cases.

bike, or pedal bike

bicycle, driver only. Weight with headlamp, pump, patch kit, kick stand, and coaster brake, 25 kg. Can carry 100 kg payload.

    • There are some pedal bikes fitted with little 1 or 2 HP gasoline motors; they're quite loud but convenient for short trips on good terrain.

cargo bike

bicycle without seat, pedals or chain drive. The handlebars are widened, the frame is strengthened, and it's fitted to carry cargo in wire, wood and canvas panniers. Cargo bikes are pushed at walking speed, and can carry up to 200 kg payload.

Pushing these doesn't even require the Drive Bike skill; a good STR and CON might come in handy, though.

mini bike

motorcycle, driver only. Engines are various small scavenged types, most often two-stroke single-cylinder motors from riding mowers or roto-tillers:  about 100cc. Fuel capacity typically 3.6 liters; fuel usage is 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers. Weight with full fuel tank, about 36 kg. These usually have no suspension, and the tires are rarely matched.

    • Stats are based on the Welbike (though none are actually Welbikes); these vehicles are almost entirely home-made after the Atomic War.

    • Other names for these in Roadtalk are mini chopper, mini moto, mini scoot (or scooter), baby bike, baby scoot, pocket bike, pocket rocket ...

road bike

motorcycle, driver + 1 passenger at most. Engine is between 737cc to 1300cc displacement, air-cooled two-cylinder, at least 25 HP. Fuel capacity is about 19 liters; fuel usage is 5 to 10 liters per 100 km. Weight with full fuel tank, at least 240 kg. 2.2 meters long.

    • Based on the Harley-Davidson WLA, "shovelhead" Harley-Davidsons, Indian Chief, Indian 841, and other large bikes of the 20th Century.

    • there are gasogen-powered versions of these. Fuel usage is 3 kg of wood per 100 kilometers. Their tiny gasogen unit only holds about 2 kg of wood at most; the gasifier is usually made from an old fire extinguisher, and stands at the extreme rear of the bike (since it's very hot).

    • Other terms for these in Roadtalk are moto, scooter, chopper, hog, ganger bike ...

sidecar bike

motorcycle; driver + maybe two passengers. Based on the road bike.

trak bike

half-track motorcycle; driver and up to six passenger. Engine is usually a 4- or 6-cylinder water-cooled gasoline or alcohol motor, at least 35 horsepower. Top speed is about 40 kph; fuel usage is 30 liters of alcohol per 100 kilometers, and there are usually two 20 liter fuel tanks (jerry cans). The engine holds about 5 liters of lubricant; the radiator and cooling system, about 14 liters of water. Empty weight  of unarmored version is about 1200 kg; maximum loaded weight is 1600 kg. Length 4 to 6 meters, width 1 meter (armored version) to 1.5 meters (unarmored version with bench seats). These vehicles usually have some light armor, in which case only one passenger -- the gunner -- is carried. On especially rough terrain, or if the front end has been damaged, the trak bike can be driven without the front wheel installed; steering is only partially performed by the front wheel.

scout bike

motorcycle, driver + 1 passenger at most. Engine is 650cc four-stroke water-cooled 37 HP multi-fuel engine. Fuel capacity is 12 to 23 liters, along with 5 liters of oil; fuel usage (for petroleum fuels) is 3 liters per 100 km. Weight with full fuel tank, 180 kg. 2.2 meters long.

    • Based on  the military versions of the Kawasaki KLR650 (and the similar KLR 250), though the Harley-Davidson MT350E comes close.

    • there are gasogen-powered versions of these. Fuel usage is 1.4 kg of wood per 100 kilometers. Their tiny gasogen unit only holds about 2 kg of wood at most.

    • Other terms used for these in Roadtalk are some combination of dirt or scout with the usual terms for a road bike.
