Doom Rider Vehicles

Page history last edited by Michael 5 years, 4 months ago

back to the Index or the Doom Riders page, the Vehicles page, the Watercraft page or the Aircraft page

Keep in mind that there are plenty of ordinary motorbikes, pickups, and light vehicles operated by the Doom Riders -- these are just some of the more unorthodox and impressive items.

chainsaw scout/demolition vehicle

A small tracked vehicle, driver only.

Engine is usually a 4- or 6-cylinder water-cooled gasoline or alcohol motor, at least 35 horsepower. Top speed is about 40 kph; fuel usage is 30 liters of alcohol per 100 kilometers, and there are usually two 20 liter fuel tanks. The engine holds about 5 liters of lubricant; the radiator and cooling system, about 14 liters of water.

Empty weight is about 1400 kg; maximum loaded weight is 1600 kg. Length 4.3 meters, width about 1 meter. Light armor is fitted on front, sides and rear; the front of the cockpit has a bit more armor as well.

Older versions were half-tracks, with the steering wheel at the rear; but the need for an escape system caused the Doom Riders to remove that wheel -- steering is done entirely with the track brakes. One of the fuel tanks can be used to hold a 20 liter demolition charge; the firing system is in the cockpit, along with the "ejection" system that propels the seat backwards onto the ground. Some of these will carry a CB radio.

Armor value:  17 points front of cockpit, 15 points on front, sides and rear of hull.

The driver uses Operate Heavy Machinery skill.

Doom Beetle

4x2 wheeled two-door coupe, driver + 2-3 passengers. Engine is a flat-four 55 HP 1.5 liter gasoline engine, converted to run on ethanol or methanol. 4 meters long, 1.5 m wide, 840 kg. Fuel usage 15 liters per 100 kilometers; fuel tank is 40 liters capacity. Armor has been added on the sides and front of the passenger compartment; an un-armored gunner's seat replaces the luggage compartment up front, with a pintle-mounted weapon installed.

    • Based on the Volkswagen beetle, baja bug, or dune buggy equivalent.

Armor value:  12 points on body.

Keep in mind that the armor on these often doesn't fully protect the crew.

The driver uses Drive Auto skill.

Doom Wagon One

here seen carrying a 15cm siege howitzer

A unique wheeled vehicle, with at least two crew.

It is apparently built from a rock truck (open pit mine dump truck), with a 1400 HP engine (60 liter displacement; apparently NOT a gasogen engine). Fuel capacity 1900 liters, fuel usage 170 liters per hour, top speed 56 kph. There are hundreds of liters of hydraulic fluid, transmission (gear) oil, and other lubricants; plus 750 liters of water in the cooling system.

It might weigh anything from 90 to 240 tons. Length about 13 meters, width about 5 meters, height about 6 meters; turning radius 25 meters. Tires are 33x51.5.

The cab is armored, with a hatch on the roof; the sides of the body, and the deck, are at least bulletproof.

Armament unknown, although it has been seen hauling artillery pieces on the deck -- heavy stabilizer pads can be lowered on each side to allow firing heavy weapons from the bed (but only when stopped for anything larger than a light mortar or small cannon). Cargo or ammunition can be carried under the deck.  At least a CB radio is fitted.

Armor value unknown, but at least 18 around the cab.

The driver uses Drive Truck skill.

Doom Wagon Two

An amphibious DUKW truck with a large cylindrical object mounted atop the body. Besides the driver and a machine gunner, 25 infantry can be carried. The cylinder is red, with large letters "DANGER - FLAMMABLE" painted on it.

It's a 6x6 truck, powered by a a 94 HP 4 liter straight-six gasoline engine; the engine also powers a propeller. Top highways speed is 80 kph; top water speed is 10 kph. Range on roads is 640 kilometers; in water, 93 kilometers. Length, 9.5 meters; width 2.5 meters, height with windshield folded down, 2.2 meters; weight empty, 5.9 tons; cargo capacity 2.5 tons. The hull is 3.2mm thick steel, at most (some parts are 1.6mm thick). A .50 caliber machine gun could be carried on a ring mount.

The "Flying Duck" experiment in the early 1950s produced a 30 knot DUCK on hydrofoils (and filled the cargo hold with a jet turbine to power it while "flying").

Hull armor value:  10.

The operator uses the Drive Truck skill.

the Doom Busters

A half-track armored fighting vehicle, designed as an assault vehicle. Crew is probably 5 men -- driver, 2 sponson gunners, main gunner, commander/loader.

The primary weapon is a short-barrelled 75mm cannon in a forward mount (traverse less than 30 degrees, elevation up to 45 degrees and down to -15 degrees), with .50 caliber machine guns in sponson mounts on each side.

It's heavily armored, with a particularly sturdy "ram plate" on the front.

The power plant and fuel supply is unknown, but there are exhaust pipes which produce a lot of smoke when it's running, so probably a petroleum fuel. It's not very fast -- the top speed observed is 30 kph; range is less than 100 kilometers.

Length not including cannon barrel, 6.5 meters; width over sponsons, 4 meters (but 4.2 meters over the ram/front bumper), height 4.4 meters (not including AA mount on top hatch). Weight estimated at 35 tons. The front wheels are 1.6 meters in diameter, and are not pneumatic tires; they are probably mine-resistant. Armor on the front, sides and bottom of the hull 60 mm of mild steel.

Only one of these has been seen -- the total number produced is unknown. A radio antenna was seen on this example.

Hull armor value 30, front, sides and bottom (ram plate probably brings lower frontal armor value to 40 points);

other values unknown.

The driver uses Operate Heavy Machinery skill.

Doom Feet

A truss-frame attack vehicle, which can carry one or two persons in the "cab" and a gunner in the back. Typically these are methanol or gasoline fueled, with one or two engines and a top speed of 120 kph. The tractor tires are 1.6 meters in diameter.

Several of these are known to exist.

The operator uses the Drive Truck skill.

Doom Pony

The driver uses the Drive Auto skill.

Doom Stallion

A 2x4 vehicle, with two 6.5 liter 300 HP "Big Block" V8 engines. Top speed 125 kph, cruise speed (highway) 95 kph. The rear axle mounts four 1.8 meter diameter tractor wheels. It's fitted with some armor around the body, and a very sturdy ram/plow in front. A pintle mount on top can hold just about any kind of "hand-aimable" weapon. Height to top of rear fins, 4 meters; weight 10.5 tons.

The driver uses the Drive Truck skill.

Gun Buggy

Also known as the Doom Buggy, it's a 4x4 armored fighting vehicle. Crew 1 or 2 in the cab, plus a couple in the open rear. Some have no weaponry, some have a machine gun in a ball mount in the cab front, and others have a pintle-mounted weapon for the "riders".

The engine is a straight-6 400 HP 12.9 liter diesel, not converted to gasogen. Top speed is unknown, but pretty zippy by 22nd Century standards.

Typical dimensions:  length 5.15 meters, width 3.36 meters (over tires; 2.12 meters over the armored body). 2.5 meters to top of cab roof. Wheels are 1.62 meter diameter steel-reinforced truck tires.

Armor is mild steel, 25mm on front, 10-15mm on the sides.

There might be a CB radio installed.

Armor value  20 on front, 16 on sides.

The driver uses the Drive Truck skill.

Doom Tractor

A three-wheeled armored assault vehicle, designed to destroy minefields and breach defenses. Crew of 2 (driver and gunner); armament is a single M2HB machine gun mounted in the front of the hull, with only about a 30 degree traverse arc. The driver can only see forwards through a narrow vision slit, and backwards by opening the access hatch.

Width across the front wheels, 4.4 meters; width of hull, 1.2 meters; length 6.5 meters; height (diameter of front wheels) 2.8 meters (4 meters to the top of the exhaust); ground clearance about 0.9 meters.

The engine is a straight-6 400 HP 12.9 liter diesel converted to gasogen power. Fuel usage is 60 to 75 kg of charcoal per 20 kilometers; it's got a bunker holding 1000 kg of charcoal (loading hatch on top of the hull, aft of the engine), but charcoal has to be moved into the gasogen burner every couple of hours. 40 liters of oil are circulating in the engine. Steering is by a combination of braking the front wheel on one side, and turning the rear wheel. Top speed is 20 kph. Weight about 30 tons -- each of the front wheels has a mass of 8 tons, and the rear (steering) wheel weighs 5 tons.. Armor on the front, rear and bottom of the hull is 40mm of RHA steel, with an additional 20mm thick mild steel stand-off plate on the underside. Armor on the top, sides and back is 10mm of RHA steel; the main wheel "hubs" and tires are made from 30mm thick mild steel -- each wheel has two circular "hubs" of this material.

The high ground pressure ensures that mines will be detonated, but also makes the vehicle unsuitable for use in sand, snow or mud. Cutting/clearing blades are fitted between the hull and the main wheels, in an attempt to prevent them from being jammed by barbed wire, debris, etc.

Despite the name, the vehicle does not have any trailer-pulling fittings. It does have towing hooks, and for "non-tactical road movement" it's usually towed backwards by a big truck. At least two of these havc been produced.

There may be a CB radio present.

Armor values:  hull front and rear 26, hull underside 33, hull sides and roof 16.

The main wheels have an armor value of about 35, and provide a lot of "spaced armor" for the hull.

The driver uses the Drive Truck skill.

Baby Doom Tractor

A four-wheeled armored assault vehicle. Crew is one; armament is a single M2HB machine gun in a manually-rotated turret. The driver can't really aim the gun while on the move (though he can "spray and pray"). Constructed from a farm tractor (and now running "backwards"), it is 4 meters long, 2.1 meters wide across the wheels (the hull is only 1.1 meters wide), and 2 meters tall (to the top of the turret). Weight is 9.3 tons.

The engine is a 7 liter straight-6 diesel, converted to gasogen power, and producing 192 HP. 28 liters of oil, and 30 liters of water, are circulating in the engine. It has power steering and power brakes. There are two 12-volt batteries carried; besides engine accessories, the electrical system includes a single headlight. Top speed is 30 kph; long-distance dirt-road speed is more often about 8 kph.

Mild steel armor plate 10mm thick covers the sides, top, rear and bottom; the front and turret sides have 25.4mm of armor. The main wheels are 25mm thick, as well, and protects the driver.

Armor values:  hull bottom, sides, rear, and top 15; turret sides and hull front 23. Through the main wheels into the hull is 24 points.

The driver uses the Drive Truck skill.

The Sound of Doom

A four-wheel semi-armored truck, fitted with powerful sound systems and a few light weapons. There are at least two of these.
