Magic Among the Asante People

Background

     The Asante believe in a mix of supernatural and "real" causes, beings, and effects. Nothing happens by chance, and the supernatural domain is more important than personal ability or behavior.

Structure and Doctrine

      The power of magic is attributed to the presence, abilities and moods of spirits. The most powerful and important of these is the Supreme Being, called Nyame -- the ultimate source of life and health.

     Human beings have flesh, a soul, and a spirit.

Rites and Rules

      A variety of shamans, herbalists, "faith" healers, medicine men, priests and priestesses, witches and spiritualists tend to the Asante's needs. They can be male or female, although there is a broad class of magical practice, here called witch magic, employed mostly by women.

Lore

     All of the tribe's lore is passed on orally; and most of it is shared between all persons -- only a few elements of magical lore are really "secret". A person would have to know the Akan language to learn any lore.

Spells

     The names here are of course NOT local, but make it easier for players to refer to the rule book.

      The usual cantrips of sorcery (Sense Magic, Magelight, Candleflame, Confusion, Simple Illusion, Minor TK, Resistance to Sorcery, and Housewifery) are also available and taught.

      The common magics of Wards and Focuses are regularly cast.
