You were born December 8, 1837, the second son of a well-to-do building contractor, educated at Winchester and Cambridge, studied medicine at St. Bartholemew's Hospital in London, and veterinary science at the University of Bath. Your parents firmly believed in the Christian virtues: modesty, piety, honesty, etc., and you have tried to live up to their example.
Your skill at diagnosis of animal illness came to the attention of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Tropical Livestock Disease, and they send you on the first of various expeditions to benighted corners of the world. You have seen more strange animals, people, faeries and monsters than almost any other person, and cured peculiar diseases in many of them.
While you have done your part to spread Christianity among the heathen, you have also realized that much strange magic and knowledge can be found in the remote corners of the earth.
On your last expedition, in the deserts of French Equatorial Africa, you rescued two persons wandering, lost in the sands: Gustav Driesel, Swiss cheese expert; and Marcus Ordolius, citizen of the lost Roman colony of Novostia.
Your possessions include a small farm in Surrey, a dusty and mostly unused office over the fashionable shops of Regent Street, and a very complete set of equipment for expedtions, including a shotgun, rifle, and pistol. You are a member of the Travellers', Reform, and Athenaeum clubs, the Royal Society, and the Royal College of Surgeons.
Languages you can speak and read include English (your native tongue), Latin (with some recent insight about Roman pronunciation), Greek, and French. You know some basic phrases in Arabic and Hindi.
