Calico

  • the Ancient town of Four Corners; a Cartel-operated fuel and rest stop in the Mojave Desert, just east of the former Edwards Air Force Base. Only a hundred or so residents, sometimes including Foundation troops.

Chino

  • centered on the California Institute for Men; population 5,700. Tech Level E. Rich.

The Collectors

  • located in Southern California, these are scavengers who worship the Ancients, and would rather not sell their valuables. Tech Level D, Poor, Non-Agricultural, Non-Industrial.

Elsinore

  • located around Lake Elsinore; population about 2,000. Tech level F, Poor, Non-Industrial, Agricultural.

The Foundation of Mankind

  • sources:  limited contact at Willows, rumors elsewhere, an ambush by the team, conversation with DRA agents, and a DRA intelligence summary

Ghouls

  • nocturnal cannibal tribe(s) in Southern California, in the desolate spaces around the Los Angeles Bay. Tech Level G, Poor, Non-Agricultural, Non-Industrial.

Headhunters

  • a tribal group in the Coast Range north of the San Francisco Bay, the term "headhunters" is not their own name for themselves, but the name used by the Foundation of Man. They are a particularly savage foe of the Foundation. A hunter-gatherer non-agricultural culture; Tech Level H or even I.

Hiders

  • a typical tribal group of the Coast Range north of San Francisco. The term "hiders" is not their own name for themselves, but rather the term used by the Foundation of Man. The Brethren have been attempting to recruit the Hiders into their cause; and the Headhunters are a traditional foe. They are a hunter-gatherer tribe, with well-hidden camps -- some underground, some high in tree-tops. Tech Level G.

Horrors

  • small gangs or tribes in Southern California, in the hills east of San Onofre. Actual mutants, most are young, sick and have fused or unformed legs. They're very sneaky, and have been planting thickets of mutated orchids in the Laguna Mountains.

Kingsburg

  • on the Kings River in the Central Valley. A parada of the Cartel, and a trading site for local farming villages.

La Crescenta

  • port city on the shore of L.A. Bay, three kilometers west of the San Gabriel River. Was Tech Level D, Rich, Industrial, Non-Agricultural; now Tech Level E, Poor, Non-Agricultural.

Lizard Men

  • an unthreatening tribe around (not in) Death Valley. They eat lizards.

Maria

  • nearly 4,000 people on the coast near Santa Maria (between Vandenburg AFB and Diablo Canyon!); the region is ruled by the Catholic Church, under the control of a Bishop, and nearly half of the residents are in holy orders

New America

The Not-Men

  • diseased, degenerate and mutated tribals on the swampy shores and low islands of the bay in the Central Valley; they are rumored to be cannibals. The Foundation of Man raids their hidden camps fairly often, and has a standing bounty on them. Tech Level I.

Nuevespania

  • about 9,000 persons along the coast at Monterey Bay, with its capital at Salinas. Apparently a monarchy; they export agricultural goods to the Foundation, the Cartel, and other groups nearby. Good relations with Maria, not so good with the Foundation (mostly on religious grounds).

People of the Moaning Caves

  • a coalition of Native American tribes (well, they claim to be, but are largely descended from pre-War Mexican and American majority types) in the Sierra Nevada foothills, east of the expanded bay in the Central Valley. In the last decade or so they've reached an accommodation with the Foundation, but are still stand-offish. Tech Level G.

The Pilgrims

Potter Valley

  • sources:  brief visit. A small community in the Coast Range, one of the few with any technical ability.

Rationalists

  • sources:  a few days escort mission in New Mexico. Yellow Base is their largest community.

Respite

  • at the southern end of the Rift canyon, this community is not far from the ruins of the pre-War city of Bakersfield. It's a parada of the Cartel, and the center of a cluster of farming communities in the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley.

Southshore

  • centered on the former UC Irvine campus; population 22,000; Tech Level E, Rich, Agricultural, Industrial.

Sulphur Peaks Alliance

  • tribals in the northern Sierra Nevada. For decades they were preyed upon by the Foundation of Man and the slavers from Oregon. While the Foundation has in recent years ceased taking slaves, the Alliance has continued to raid nearby Foundation settlements and farms. They are not descended from Native Americans. Tech Level F.

Valley Wells

  • a Cartel parada in the wide, dry stretch of Ancient freeway between Barstow and Las Vegas. Only a dozen or so people live here.

Ventura

  • port town to the west of the Simi Valley

Visalia

  • the largest community of a network of small farming towns in the southern San Joaquin Valley.

Wreckers

  • a piratical, tribal culture in the central Sierra Nevada, living in squalid, secret camps. Over the last decade or so they've been mostly suppressed by the Foundation of Man, which has standing bounties on them. Tech Level E.

Yokuts Council

  • a coalition of several Native American tribes in the Sierra Nevada foothills, on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley. Their largest community and trading post, Bokdohinu, is built near the ruins of Porterville.
