Raphael Sanchez Background

back to the Index, or to Recon Team R40, or to Raphael Sanchez

Born in Trona, California (in the Searles Valley) Raphael could see at an early age this mining and chemical town, which is literally a "company town" was a dead end. You either work for the factory or find a way to leave. Raphael scored high enough on the ASVAB to get his foot in the door for the Navy and their Nuclear Power School. After several years on Nuclear Submarines the desert born Raphael couldn't take another 89 day tour under the water and mustered out. During his time in the Navy there was a pretty bad strike in Trona and this made a future there even less likely. There are two types in Trona, Bosses and Workers and his family had always been on the losing end and he was unlikely to ever change that.

In 1983 San Onofre nuclear generating station was opening up Unit 2 with plans for Unit 3 and Raphael applied as an operator. The employment agency gave him an alternate contact for a private firm that was looking for former military personnel with technical experience in certain fields and his background as a nuclear power plant technician in the Navy caught their attention. This is where the "private firm" revealed themselves as the Morrow Project. He heard what they had to say and the thought that an hispanic from the working class of a mining town would get to live while the "bosses" died in nuclear fire  appealed to his Catholic "and the meek shall inherit the Earth" upbringing. Besides, he could be at the sharp end of building a new America, a fully unionized America.

Raphael is very much a "Union man", like his cousins and parents. With most of his relatives working either in agriculture or factories, the Union being the great equalizer for his ethnic group, a journeyman with 10 years makes the same no matter skin color. Raphael is also fascinated by gadgets and new technologies. He bought an Italian revolver, the Mateba MTR-8M, because it was so different to everything else in function and never mind there are no holsters made for it.
