Morrow Project 40mm Grenades

Page history last edited by Michael 7 years, 7 months ago

When fired into snow, water, or mud, contact-fused 40mm rounds may fail to detonate, and they have no self-destruct mechanism. Note that these are all of the "low pressure/low velocity" type, sometimes known as 40x46mm, not the later high-velocity grenades used by the Mk19 grenade launcher.

MBA Stunbag

This cartridge fires a 15 cm diameter cloth bag filled with #8 lead shot and yellow dye marking powder. The cartridge is marked "Long Range Stunbag Marking" on the front, and "MB Associates - Patent Pending - US and Foreign" on the side. MB Associates is better known for the Gyrojet pistol. Weight 0.23 kg, length 8.5 cm, packed 44 rounds per case, case weight 20.2 kg. Effective range 50 meters, maximum range 70 meters.

  • damage 3d6 buffeting, has no effect against more than 3 points of soft armor or any amount of rigid armor (though being shot in the helmet with this might not be fun, you might take 1d6 buffeting in that situation)

M433 High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP)

A combination round, containing a shaped charge and a fragmentation jacket.  The fuse arms after traveling 14 to 27 meters, and then detonates on contact, sending fragments out to at least 5 meters. Penetration 50mm RHA steel (31 pts armor). Weight 0.226 kg, length 10.3 cm; packed 72 rounds per case, case weight 26.3 kg. Effective range (against area targets) 350 meters, maximum range 400 meters.

  • direct hit damage from the shaped charge is 5d6 impaling, and will penetrate up to 31 points of armor. Inside a penetrated vehicle or structure, blast or debris damage will be about 3d6 or so for a couple of meters.

  • damage from fragments is 5d6 impaling at 1 meter, reduced by 1d6 each meter distant beyond that. Maximum penetration is 3 points. From 6 to 10 meters, make a POWx10% roll to avoid taking 1d6 damage. Roll separate locations for each die of damage taken, and each must penetrate armor individually.

M651 Tear Gas

The fuse of this round arms after traveling 14 to 27 meters, and then ignites the CS gas filling, which burns for 25-30 seconds. The gas cloud has a nominal area of 6 meters width and 12 meters along the flight path, about 2 meters deep. It will penetrate 1.9 cm of pine (3 pts armor) before functioning. Weight 0.308 kg, length 11.6 cm, packed 24 rounds per case, case weight 11.8 kg. Effective range 200 meters, maximum range 400 meters.

  • damage 4d6 buffeting if you're struck by the round.

  • gas effects start a round or two after exposure, and persist for 10 or 15 minutes. Once exposed, treat as a POT 15 poison vs. CON every round; if you fail, you can't really open your eyes well enough to see anything, and can't stop coughing that round. In either case, your chance to make any skill roll is halved while affected. Treatments like washing your face can reduce the persistence.

  • Wearing a cloth over your mouth and nose reduces the POT by 5; getting outside the cloud after you've been exposed reduces the POT by 5. If you've received tear gas training "in recent years", your CON is doubled for purposes of resisting effects.

  • The gas will contaminate non-waterproof clothing.

M576E2 Multiple Projectile

The round contains 20 pellets of 00 buckshot. Weight 0.12 kg, length 6.7 cm, packed 144 rounds per case, case weight 21.7 kg. Effective range 30 meters, maximum range 50 meters.

  • damage 4d6/2d6/1d6 impaling, each die of damage must penetrate armor separately, maximum penetration 6 points.

M583 Parachute Flare

When fired the shell releases a magnesium parachute flare at an altitude of about 170 meters. The flare burns for 40 seconds, producing 45000 candlepower, illuminating an area 200 meters in radius. Weight 0.226 kg, length 13.4 cm, packed 44 rounds per case, case weight 20.2 kg. Maximum range 200 meters.

  • damage 4d6 buffeting, plus the magnesium flare

Star Shell

When fired the shell reaches an altitude of about 170 meters and releases 5 illuminating stars:   white (M585), green (M663) or red (M664). The stars burns for 7 to 11 seconds. Weight 0.226 kg, length 13.4 cm, packed 44 rounds per case, case weight 20.2 kg. Maximum range 200 meters.

  • damage 4d6 buffeting, plus the burning stars ...

M688 Grapnel Launcher Shell

A socket in the front of this cartridge accepts the butt end of a special grappling hook ... or any other rod about 12.7 mm in diameter. The XM1 rocket-assisted grapnel can carry am 8mm diameter climbing rope to a height of 42 meters (at 75 degrees launcher elevation); maximum horizontal range 70 meters (at 45 degrees launcher elevation). Cartridge weight 0.5 kg, length 7 cm, packed 24 rounds per case, case weight 16.5 kg.

  • damage 4d6 buffeting, but depends on what is inserted into the socket

The Grapnel, Launcher Propelled, XM1 consists of the M688 munition for the M79 grenade launcher, a grapnel with rocket-assist motor and igniter cartridge, and a rope pack. The M688 shell is breech loaded, and the grapnel is muzzle loaded. After the grapnel impacts, the line is pulled manually to set the anchor.

A grapnel complete with rocket motor and igniter cartridge (mass 6 kilograms), plus one M688 shell, is normally issued in a bandoleer (mass 0.2 kg), total mass 6.7 kg

The rope pack (0.3 kg) contains an 8mm diameter, 122 meter length, nylon line (mass 5.1 kg); the pack complete with line weighs 5.4 kg
