Morrow Project Depot Alpha

Page history last edited by Michael 7 years, 7 months ago

back to the Index or to Team R54

Somewhere in Zone 1 of the United States is an unmanned facility, Depot Alpha. It is in the form of a long tunnel with six chambers opening into it at the entrance end, and one at the far end. Storage conditions are similar to those in a Team bolthole, but it doesn't have a monitor or radio. There is a lighting and power distribution system within the depot, however, powered by a Mark 1 fusion generator.

It is not intended to produce a refugee camp, but rather to provide materials for construction of a 1000-person "support center" for Project services. For that purpose, it contains material to build 120 semi-permanent structures. It's expected that 20 people can put up the support center in two weeks, with a good site, water supply, favorable weather, and the vehicles and electrical power provided by the Project. Probably the Project leadership has a selection of likely sites already marked on some map somewhere ...

The buildings are made from inflatable concrete-impregnated canvas, each stored in a waterproof bag on a wooden pallet box. They can be set up by two persons, take about a day to cure after being soaked in water, and can be covered by earth, snow, etc. for improved insulation and fragment-proofing; they are waterproof and fireproof and expected to last 10 years in use. The smaller building is (when stored) about 2.5 meters square and 1.1 meter high, weighing 1.9 tons; when erected it covers 25 square meters (suitable to house 10 persons). The larger building takes up 3 by 2.2 by 1.7 meters when stored, and weighs 3.1 tons; it covers 54 square meters when erected.

  • chambers 1 through 3 each contain 32 small shelters; chamber 4 has 24 of the larger shelters; along with the accessory kits (lockable doors, stove jacks, vents, etc.) and four electric inflation fans per chamber

  • chamber 5 contains housing equipment (cots, blankets, heaters, air conditioners, field telephones, light fixtures, some tents, toilets, etc.) for 1000 persons.

  • chamber 6 has infrastructure equipment - kitchens, freezers, water and power distribution, sanitation, showers, fire extinguishers, sewage treatment, repair shop, two survival libraries in jeep trailers, and a selection of took kits and hand tools for putting the equipment to use. Thus hammers, sledges, hand drills, squares and levels, saws, wrenches, pliers, etc. ... probably enough to equip a dozen or more "workers".

  • chamber 7 (at the far end of the tunnel) has medical equipment:  surgical equipment, x-ray machines, autoclaves, etc. to fit out a 200 bed MASH-type hospital

  • The central "lobby" is a tunnel 9 meters wide and 200 meters long, with an open lane down the middle. It contains vehicles, parked nose-to-tail along both sides, with jackstands to keep their wheels off the floor during storage. The vehicles are all painted olive drab; the "regular" ones contain their usual team equipment, except they don't have computers, Laser Disk drives or Autonavs aboard. In rough order from the entrance towards the back they are:

    • one V-150 APC

    • one V-150 20mm

    • one MW24C scoop loader, converted to fusion power

    • two XR-311

    • two Commando Scout

    • four Commando Ranger

    • one V-150 recovery and repair vehicle

    • five Allis-Chalmers electric forklifts, capacity 4000 kg (NOT fusion powered, they are battery powered for use at the depot initially)

    • six M818 five-ton semi-tractor trucks, converted to fusion power. They are each 7.3 meters long. These use the same 14x20 "5 ton truck" wheels and tires as the V-150, and share some other mechanical components. They don't have any "team equipment", but just basic items:  pioneer tools, tow cable, breaker bar, vehicle jack, snow chains, etc. They do carry a single spare tire.

    • twelve M870 lowbed semi-trailers, 40-ton capacity, 2.9 meters wide, 12.8 meters long. They use 11x20 tires, but don't have spares aboard. Eight of them have loads aboard:

      • two Airscouts (one trailer)

      • two Mark 2 fusion generators, ten Mark 1 fusion generators (two trailers)

      • two fusion-powered Case model M4K articulated rough-terrain forklifts 4.4 tons each, top speed 32 kph (two trailers)

      • two Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi vans, converted to battery power/electric motors (each van is loaded with conversion gear for five more Kombis); 150 wheel-and-tire sets (195R14), and twenty more conversion kits are loaded on pallets (one trailer).

        • the conversion kit provides 240 MP "vehicle batteries" a 78 HP electric motor, a controller and some conversion hardware. The resulting vehicle has a 320 km range. The conversion package weighs about 180 kg each. Go find 30 more VW Kombi vans!

      • 70 wooden utility poles, 13 meters long, 540 kg each (one trailer).

      • fourteen 1.68 m diameter aluminum spools of electrical transmission wire (8 km per drum), and other transmission system components, for camp construction (one trailer)

    • one M1098 5000 gallon semi-trailer water tanker, with hoses, a filtration system and an electric pump. 9.3 meters long; it has an 11x20 spare tire attached. Note that a very nice refugee camp will provide 20 liters (about 5 gallons) per person per day; a crummy camp, only 8 liters (2 gallons). Thus this tanker can provide one day's supply to the nominal "1000 person camp", but the Project expects to gather other tanker trailers, etc..

    • four M971 van semi-trailers, 10.8 meters long (personnel door on right side, A/C or window openings on front end, water, electrical and telephone fittings inside for use as shop or lab van, two 11x20 spare tires carried underneath). They are pre-loaded with supplies:

      • trailer 1:  ten sets of "shelter assistance" cache contents

      • trailer 2:  about 60,000 LRP ration meals

      • trailer 3:  five sets of "neighborhood defense" cache contents, two resupply cache contents, and one each of the universal, operations "A", operations "B", and operations "C" cache contents

      • trailer 4:  720 TRW Low Maintenance Rifles, with 6 magazines each; 720 resistweave coveralls (various sizes, no markings or patches), and 260,000 rounds of 5.56mm ball ammunition

    • three "demolition" dump semi-trailers, 10.4 meters long, with convertible doors (swing up or side-opening), 47 yard (36 cubic meters) capacity, 8mm thick steel body. They each carry one 11x20 spare tire.

      • three are filled with thousands of empty sandbags and four spare 11x20 tires on wheels

      • one has thirty-two 14.5x20 Commando Special runflat tire and wheel sets, for M818 tractors and Commando vehicles

In addition, three holes were dug in the hillsides within a kilometer or so, filled with bulk construction materials, and then covered over. They are each about 2000 cubic meters, and contain:

    • gravel

    • sand

    • aggregate

As an item of note, there are 36 fusion generators in the depot (including the vehicles and the depot's own generator).

Some questions for your consideration: Does the Depot have replacement team personal gear? Including Scalp suits, boots, etc. Do the basic vehicles have their 'standard' equipment kits (cold weather, desert, etc)? Is there any sort of vehicle shop equipment (lubricants, jacks, vehicle lifts, hand tools, work lights, etc)? Are there any spare computers or larger radios? Also, what about basic tools such as shovels. picks, axes, and so on?

Cache contents include personal gear, SCALP suits, spare tires, vehicle lubricant, and some tools. Vehicles in this unmanned Depot have their usual "Team Equipment Kits" aboard. Chamber 6 has a lot of tools, including picks and shovels. There's no vehicle shop, spare computers (aside from those in the vehicles) or larger/spare radios. Keep in mind that the Project expects to wake up 5 years after the War ... there should be plenty of shop tools still around.

Regular Morrow vehicles come with their own jacks, tool set, work lights, and some spares, too.
