These are notes about locations in our campaign.

A

Alton Keep - located on the high cliffs overlooking Denerim Bay from the north, with a royal garrison. The nearest village is Mamble, about five miles inland. The approach to the keep from inland is through steep, rocky terrain, not useful for cultivation; except for a few isolated residences, there is little else in the area. The keep has a couple of large towers built into it, and a very tall tower on a sea-stack, connected to the keep by a drawbridge (hinged on the inland side). A sea-cave at the foot of the cliffs allows the troops to row out to galleys.

Arksmonten - a hidden, fortified city in the Frostback Mountains, southwest of Honnleath. Created and powered by magic, and inhabited by about 3000 of the Caeli folk. The city is ruled by Elysia, a powerful elven spirit and blood mage.

C

Celatus - "Secret" in the ancient Tevinter language. Erected in the hills within the northern Brecilian Forest, not far from modern South Reach, by the Tevinter Imperium. At some point, it became a Circle Tower, home to mages under the control and supervision of the Chantry and Templars. Circa 5:72 Exalted, the Right of Annulment was ordered to be applied to the tower; presumably the Templars slew all the inhabitants. The tower may have been within sight of Moon Peak; it is now infested by dragon-kind.

D

The Dancing Bear Inn - located five days away from South Reach, along the road to Denerim (★★★✰✰ $$). There are no settlements nearby. Until recently this inn was known as the Flaming Marmot.

Dane's Turn - a small hamlet south of South Reach. It really consists only of the inn, "Dane's".

Denerim - capital of Ferelden. Landon spent a lot of time there as a youth. Hanlon is a nearby village. Hounds Hall is here.

When anyone in Ferelden speaks of "going to the city," they inevitably mean Denerim. There is no other place in the kingdom which rivals it: Not in size, population, wealth, or importance. It is the seat of the Theirin family, the capital of Ferelden, the largest seaport, and, by ancient tradition, the meeting place of the Landsmeet.

As well, Denerim was the birthplace of Andraste. One of them, anyway, as several other sites claim to have been the prophet's early home, including Jader, in Orlais. The Chantry takes no stance on which site's claim is valid, but it is well known that Andraste was Fereldan by birth. When visiting the pilgrimage site in Denerim, it is inadvisable to mention Jader at all.

The city rests at the foot of the Dragon's Peak, a solitary mountain scarred by ancient lava flows. During Andraste's lifetime, it reputedly filled the sky with a great column of black ash and sent burning rock raining down as far away as the Free Marches, but it is now considered extinct. Some believe it merely sleeps, and will again darken the sky with ash and fire when the last Fereldan king dies, but this is highly unlikely. --From In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of A Chantry Scholar, by Brother Genitivi

Drakford - a village on the road from South Reach to Denerim, only a day's travel from South Reach. The Blue Meadow Inn (★★★✰✰ $$) is located there.

Dragon Pass - on the road from South Reach to Denerim, about two days travel from Denerim. The Dragon Pass Inn (★★★★✰ $$$$) is located here.

Dunmoe - a village between South Reach and Woevill

E

East Drakford - a village not far from Drakford. The High River Inn is located there.

Edgehall - a castle in the foothills of the Frostback Mountains. The ancient foundations are dwarven, the outer walls and (ruined) tower are Orlesian, and the rather scruffy buildings within the bailey are typical modern Fereldan architecture.

F

Flaming Marmot Inn - now named the Dancing Bear Inn (q.v.)

G

Gray Raven Inn - three days away from South Reach, along the road to Denerim (✰✰✰✰✰ $).

Gwaren - a port city south of the Brecilian Forest. It is the seat of the powerful warlord and teyrn Loghain Mac Tir. Home of Jayce.

H

Hanlon - a village near Denerim. Birthplace of Landon.

Honnleath - a small town in the Hinterlands. Home of Bran.

K

Kingsway Village - about 3 days away from South Reach, along the road to Denerim.

L

Lothering - a town along the West Road. The Templars there are under the command of Knight-Corporal Gray. An alchemist named Belarn has his shop there.

In ancient times, Lothering was little more than a trading post that served the fortress of Ostagar to the south. Nowadays, it is larger, serving Redcliffe and the community of merchants and surface dwarves near Orzammar. Its location on the North Road gives it strategic value, so control of Lothering has historically been a matter of contention between the Southern Bannorn and the South Reach Arling. King Calenhad himself stepped in and awarded the town to South Reach in the Exalted Age, which has largely ended the feud, or at least the appearance of it.  --From In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of A Chantry Scholar, by Brother Genitivi

M

Madbourne - a village two days travel from South Reach, along the road to Denerim; 600 people live there. There's an inn (★★★★✰ $$)

Moon Peak - a mountain in the Southron Hills. In the Elven language it's known as Gallac Bu Buoc (Lisa can update my phonetic spelling); at the peak is Mythalvhalen, a temple to Mythal.

P

Plumbrock - a small town near South Reach, a bit less than a day's travel away (probably five hours travel, on foot). The inn is the Purple Frog (★★★☆☆). It's not far from Woevill.

Port Celatus - a small cove on the Fereldan coast, facing the Amaranthine Ocean and with the Brecilian Forest at its back. Known only to the Wardens and their allies.

Q

R

Redcliffe - a town and large castle at the southern end of Lake Calenhad; seat of a powerful noble. Revered Mother Bona is in charge of the Chantry there. Home of Daniella and her family. The local tavern is Lloyd's (★☆☆☆☆ $$$ during early Blight).

Sitting on the western shore of Lake Calenhad, the village of Redcliffe is so named for the reddish hues of the cliffs that tower above it. A path leads up into the hills and across a bridge to an island where the ancient Castle Redcliffe has stood far longer than the village itself.  Redcliffe is located in the western hills of Ferelden. It once served as a strategic point between Orzammar and Ferelden when the humans of Ferelden feared dwarven invasion. The village around the castle grew until the arling was as much a powerful settlement as anything ruled by a teyrn. The heraldic symbol for Redcliffe is a tower on a red cliff.

Castle Redcliffe has stood for far longer than the village below. Since the days of the Alamarri clans, the castle has guarded the main pass through the Frostback Mountains into Orlais. It was here that the Avvar hill folk came to strike at the lowlands to the east, and it was this castle the Orlesian Empire needed to bring to its knees before conquering Ferelden. That was not an easy task, for while the folk of Redcliffe are simple they are also proud of their ancient role as Ferelden's first line of defense. "There is iron in the hills, as there is in the people" goes the local saying, and no-one disbelieves it. The fortress has been laid siege many times but only in three occasions it was successfully captured, one of which was by King Calenhad. During the Fereldan Rebellion, the fortress was held by Orlesian nobles until liberated and restored to the Guerrins.

Red Meadows - a village near the town of South Reach.

S

South Reach - one of the banns, and also the name of its capital town, along the West Road. The town has a population of 5500 persons, and is not fortified. The King & Crown (high quality and cost), the Graywater Inn, the Bridge Tavern, and the Winterberry Inn (favoring elves) are some of the places offering accommodations in town. The arl of South Reach is Bryland. Eirik is an apothecary in the town. Red Meadows is a nearby village.

Southron Hills - a range of mountains running along the western edge of the Brecilian Forest. Trees grow to the tops of these hills, so they are hardly alpine peaks. The range is infested with dragon-kind, werewolves, and other hazards. Moon Peak is one of the mountains, with a temple to Mythal at the top.

W

White Buck Tavern - an inn along the West Road, between Redcliffe and Lothering. Attacked by darkspawn, it now lies empty.

Woevill - a bannorn at the edge of the Brecilian Forest. As of 9:30 Guardian, the Bann is Daniella. There's a fancy manor, High Creek House. A mine near the manor house produces (officially) lead and silver.
