C.T. "Teddie" White received a quick commission as a Lieutenant in the Staffordshire Yeomany not long after he turned 18, and was sent to join the regiment in Egypt. Upon arrival, his school ties got him 'poached' for staff work, and he ended up in Department "One-Ess" of the Intelligence Section. As the official duties of this Department included handling the most sensitive classified material, he ended up with a very high security rating for a young lieutenant. The staff of the department -- enlisted men, warrant officers, and civilians -- had all the technical tasks well in hand, politely rejecting White's amateur interest in cryptography. The Intelligence Section assigned one of the "internal" duties to him: Morale Officer. As the Morale Officer, his job was to organize holiday events, arrange for outings, keep the library stocked, make sure the snack bar was stocked, etc. The most important duty of the department, for a junior officer, was "liaison with Political Officers". These important men came and went from all over the Empire; they wanted things from the Intelligence agencies; and their whims had to be catered to. Some were military officers, others were from the Foreign Office, the Levant Service, or Colonial Office, while others had strange anomalous status. There is pretty much a Political Officer (PO) for any tribal chief, important province, conquered town ... and they ran their own little spy outfits. "A political officer's duties are various, the underlying idea being that all dealings with the natives (except killing them) should be done through him." While there are other agencies that handled the "basic" travel-lodging-pay-dining-etc needs of the Political Officers themselves, the POs often made strange requests. As a result, Mr. White has considerable practice at showing complete indifference to the behaviors and customs of foreigners.
