Ferry Connections

Several ferries run between Dover and Ostend, none carrying railway cars, but some carrying automobiles (from June 1st to the end of summer). The May 22nd 1937 Bradshaw's has an advertisement, which mentions "two services daily (Sundays included.) Night service from June 25th to September 12th. 1st and 2nd class cabins on board the steamers are reservable in advance." and also "A Motor Ferry -- the London-Istanbul -- runs daily during the season between Dover and Ostend from the 1st of June, for the convenience of motorists and their cars."

The scheduled time pier-to-pier between Dover and Ostend is a bit more than 3 hours, but of course this can vary depending on the weather.

Fares vary a bit depending on which vessel you ride upon (Prins Albert, Prince Baudouin, Princess Marie-José, etc.), but the following are typical for 1937. Fares are given in Belgian francs; for August 1939, 100 Belgian francs is 13 shillings 9 pence and a half; or £1 is 145 Belgian francs.

  • First Class

    • half-cabin (shared with another passenger), 60 francs (a bit more than 8 shillings)

    • special cabin, 150 francs (a little more than £1)

    • cabines de luxe, 200 francs (roughly £1 7s 6p)

    • suite comprising a cabine de luxe, plus a special cabin, and a private lavatory, 300 francs (about £2 1s)

  • Second Class

    • berth in cabin shared with another passenger, 50 francs

    • private cabin (has two berths)k, 100 francs
