back to the Index or the European Trains page

First-class Pullman accommodation in Europe averages 4.5d per mile traveled, plus 15s - 20s per night for sleeping berth. 3d per mile for second-class, plus 10s - 12s per night for sleeping berth. Third class is about 1.5d per mile, plus 6s per night for sleeping berth. From Bordeaux to Madrid is about 500 miles, so about £10 3s for a first-class fare ... call it £11 including meals and tips.

Normal consist for this train in France is two baggage/mail cars, three first-class sleeping cars, one restaurant car, and two "day" salon cars, effectively second class. The train travels at somewhat less than express speeds within Spain, and the "day" cars are somewhat less pleasant than the French versions. Sleeping-car passengers traditionally receive a free bowl of chocolate and a small decanter of port wine.

When inaugurated in 1926, the coach composition was 2 fourgons (one at each end), two 2nd class Pullman coaches "sans cuisine", two 1st class Pullman coaches, and a restaurant car for the 1st class passengers.

There's another train that departs a few hours later, and runs much slower.

Passengers can continue from Madrid on the Spanish rail network to Algeciras, to Tangier by ferry, and thence via Moroccan railway to Casablanca.

Hendaye (the last station in France) and Irun (the last station in Spain) each have customs stations; coach bogies are converted to or from Spanish broad gauge in Hendaye. Thus the international bridge over the Bidasoa river has one track of each gauge.
