Nord Express

Page history last edited by Michael 5 years, 5 months ago

back to the Index, or to the European Trains page

A daily train from Paris or London, to Warsaw, Poland; through coaches will carry passengers on other trains to the Soviet Union from Warsaw or Riga. From Riga, gauge changes to 5' Russian standard, and connecting trains (coaches not operated by Wagon-Lits) travel east to Leningrad and Moscow. Wagon-Lits coaches operate over the rest of the Nord Express network, though they are sometimes not every coach on the train.

The train merges and splits several times; the schedules below have been very simplified east of Berlin. From Paris, heading east, the train is:

    • 1 or 2 fourgons (baggage cars)

    • sleeper, bound for Warsaw

    • sleeper, came down from Calais, bound for Warsaw

    • sleeper, bound for Berlin

    • restaurant car, bound for Berlin

    • sleeper, bound for Berlin and Riga (on the D1 express)

    • sleeper, bound for Copenhagen (detaches at Hannover)

Two coaches join the train from Ostend; three times a week, one of those coaches is detached at Berlin and heads south to Prague, and eventually to Bucharest. Also at Berlin the original restaurant car is detached, and a fresh one joins for the trip to Warsaw. One sleeper coach from Paris is attached to the D1 express train in Berlin, for the trip to Riga. From Riga a connection can be made on the broad gauge to Moscow.

The locomotives are usually Chemins de Fer du Nord "Superpacifics" in France; Class 01 in Germany since the late 1920s; in Poland the train is drawn by Pd5 or Pk class engines. As far east as Warsaw, the train operates at speeds up to 75 miles per hour.

Many minor stops for water, fuel, customs officials, engine changes, etc. are not shown.
