Background

 

     Harlan was born in Pine Nut, a small town on the northern edge of South Carolina, in Surry county; his father worked as a quarryman. He spent a year in Vietnam as a combat medic. After leaving the Army he opened a small hunting-and-fishing shop in his home town. He also worked as a volunteer fire-fighter.
