Keep in mind that there are often steep import taxes on motor vehicles -- American manufacturers often face a 20% tariff in Europe, for example. In France, there's a tariff (amount unknown so far) and a 35% tax on the purchase price of a car (new or otherwise).

During the Depression, used cars from the 1920s -- even luxury cars -- can be purchased in America for $200 or less (among other issues, they use a lot of fuel). A used Ford Model T, in good condition, costs $50 to $75; a beat-up but running Model T can be bought for $15.

Keywords are:  (country name), sport, fast (100+ mph), cheap ($600/£120 or less for automobiles), expensive ($1500/£300 or more for automobile), off-road, truck, motorcycle.

                Avions Voisin C23

Several different designs by this French maker -- the C23 is roughly the most produced in 1934-35 (see also the C25, C26, and C28). Often produced without bodies (for custom coach builders) factory-bodied examples usually have aluminum bodies and very strikingly "modern" Art Deco appearance. Very low production numbers, almost none after 1936, but many were custom made with idiosyncratic elements. Most are not super fast (up to 85 mph), but with many useful features (e.g., two radios, automatic sliding sun roof) and supremely reliable engines (often V12). Voison was an aviation enthusiast. Keywords:  France, expensive.

                Austin Seven

4 seat, 2 door sedan or convertible; straight-4 45 cid engine, top speed 52 mph; costs about $500 new; durable but eccentric. Extremely common in the UK, copied in Germany (Dixi/BMW), France (Rosengarts), the US (American Austin), and Japan (Nissan). Keywords:  Britain, Germany, France, America, Japan, cheap.

Austin Litchfield 10/4 Saloon de Luxe

All sorts of body types are available:  saloon, tourer, a slightly faster sport model, a van, and even a pickup. The 4 cylinder engine produces 21 horsepower (but is rated at 10 HP for tax purposes in the UK); top speed 55 mph. In 1935 the basic model saloon (4 door sedan) costs £155; for £172 you can get the de Luxe saloon (with opening roof and leather upholstery). Photo here. Keywords:  Britain.

                Austin Twelve-4

The standard London taxi since 1929.

The fastest street-legal car in the world in 1934 -- eclipsed by the supercharged Duesenberg that same year. Alas, not very reliable:  they never won a major race. Introduced 1930; fictional owners include James Bond and John Steed. Keywords:  Britain, sport, fast, expensive.

                Bentley Speed Six

2 seat, two-door automobile (though body type depended on customer and coachbuilder, wheelbases available from 138", 140.5" or 152", and some were 5-seat 4-door cars), 403 cid 180 HP straight-6 engine, top speed about 100 mph (less if it's carrying a saloon or limousine body, of course). The chassis with engine and running gear costs £1,700. It runs on gasoline and castor oil, about equally. The 60.9 cubic inch V-twin engine produces 45 horsepower; top speed is 100 mph. There's also a sidecar available, with extra fuel carried in the sidecar frame. This is about the fastest, most expensive "stock" motorcycle available.
