Tiyu

Land of Devils and the Dead

aka Hell

aka The Demon Juncture

Ruled by Yen-Lo Wang, the King of Hell, Tiyu (also transliterated as Diyu) is a maze of underground levels and chambers where souls atone for their earthly sins. Yen-Lo's court is Yen-Lo Dian; the ten administrative courts are:

    • Mirror of Retribution; ruled by Qin-Guang Wang.
    • The Pool of Filth and the Hell of Ice; ruled by Qu-Jiang Wang.
    • Black Rope Hell and the Upside-Down Prison; ruled by Song-Di Wang.
    • The Lake of Blood and the terrible Bee Torture; ruled by Wu-Guan Wang.
    • Sixteen Departments of Heart Gouging; ruled by Yen-Lo Wang.
    • Screaming Torture and Administrative Errors; ruled by Bian-Cheng Wang.
    • Torture by Mincing Machine; ruled by Tai-Shan Wang.
    • Hot Suffocation Hell; ruled by Du-Shi Wang.
    • Iron Web and Office of Fair Trading; ruled by Ping-Deng Wang.
    • The Wheel of Rebirth; ruled by Zhuang-Lun Wang.

"Wang" of course means 'king'. The rulers of the courts are sometimes known as the "kings of Yama", and are judges of the dead. Ox-Head and Horse-Face are the two primary guardians of Tiyu, and are the first devils met by new arrivals (or at least official arrivals!). Other regions of Tiyu include:

    • Chamber of Wind and Thunder – People who kill and commit heinous crimes out of greed are sent here for punishment.
    • Chamber of Grinding – Wealthy men who do no good and waste food are ground into powder in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Flames – People who steal, plunder, rob and cheat are sent here to be burnt.
    • Chamber of Ice – Children who ill-treat their parents and elders are sent here to be frozen in ice.
    • Chamber of Oil Cauldrons – Sex offenders such as rapists, lechers, adulterers are fried in oil in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Dismemberment by Sawing – Kidnappers and people who force good women into prostitution suffer the fate of being sawn in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Dismemberment by Chariot – Corrupt officials and landlords who oppress and exploit the people are dismembered by a chariot in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Mountain of Knives – People who cheat customers by earning more than they should, profiteers who jack up prices and cheat on the quality of goods are made to shed blood by climbing the mountain of knives.
    • Chamber of Tongue Ripping – Gossips who stir trouble and liars suffer the fate of having their tongues ripped out in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Pounding – Cold-blooded murderers are pounded in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Torso-severing – Scheming and ungrateful men have their torsos severed in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Scales – Crooks who oppress the innocent, people who cheat on the quality of goods and daughters-in-law who ill-treat their in-laws have hooks pierced into their body and hung upside down.
    • Chamber of Eye-gouging – Peeping toms who go around peeking and leering have their eyeballs gouged out in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Heart-digging – People with evil hearts have theirs dug out in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Disembowelment – Instigators, hypocrites and tomb-robbers have their bowels dug out in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Blood – Blasphemous crooks who show no respect to the gods suffer the fate of being skinned in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Maggots – Crooks who use loopholes in the law to cheat and engage in malpractice are being eaten alive by maggots in this chamber.
    • Chamber of Avici – Crooks who have committed heinous crimes, brought misery to the people and betrayed the ruler are placed on a platform above an inferno. The unlucky ones fall off the platform into the inferno and burn while the lucky ones remain on the platform. These spirits are never to be reincarnated.

An important person in Tiyu is Meng Po, the Lady of Forgetfulness ("meng" means 'dream'). It is her task to ensure that souls who are ready to be reincarnated do not remember their previous life or their time in hell.

To this end she collects herbs from various earthly ponds and streams to make her Five Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness -- or, alternately, the Bittersweet Broth of Oblivion (for people she dislikes). These are given to each soul to drink before they leave Tiyu. The brews induce instant and permanent amnesia, and all memory of other lives is lost.

Having been purged of all previous sins and knowledge, the dead spirit is sent to be reborn in a new earthly incarnation, and the cycle begins again. Occasionally people are able to avoid drinking the Tea or Broth, resulting in past life memories surfacing in children.

Besides the fact that the Jammers' primate leaders are bad-ass already, the minions of Yen-Lo Wang are very afraid of monkeys anyway -- the "Monkey King", Sun Wu-K'ung, has put the fear of ape into them!

There is a large variety of demons and other monsters in Hell. The Buro and sorcerors from various junctures capture or summon the demons as servants or cannonfodder; this is bitterly resented by the Kings of Tiyu. For twenty years or so, the Four Monarchs (aka the Si Wang, or the Four Wangs, heh heh) have maintained four "palaces" in Hell, using their reality-bending sorceries to fend off the demonic armies; this is also resented.

I recommend a look at the Myths of Haw Par Villa for info on how the Chinese see the underworld. Would you want to turn into a crab?

Red spider lilies are the most common flower.
