TooB Pepper Spray

Defense Technology MK-4 pepper spray canister  -- 3 ounces of 10% OC, 2 million SHU. Also contains UV dye.

The active ingredient Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) is an extract of New World red peppers. OC is an inflammatory agent that affects mucous membranes and respiratory tracts as well as causes severe burning of eyes.

Pepper sprays are available as a cone shaped mist, coherent stream, or high volume burst delivery. The solution of OC and solvent carrier is designed to be sprayed directly into the face of the attacker. Effective range is 2 meters for the mist, 3 meters for the spray versions; the burst version is good for only one shot, but fills an area about 5 meters across with mist. The 3 ounce mist or spray versions are good for about five uses each (the MK-3, of 1.5 ounce capacity, is only good for two uses). The mist or burst clouds are nitrogen-propelled, but are carried in an alcohol solvent, and are thus flammable.

Effects are an immediate closing of the eyes, uncontrollable coughing, temporary weakness, and loss of coordination. These effects are almost instantaneous and last for about one half hour. OC is not soluble in water; and rubbing the affected tissues will often drive the spray deeper, prolonging the unpleasant effects. Alcohol, soap or milk are useful in reducing the effects of pepper spray on the skin.

Similar products with lower OC content will have briefer effects, proportional to the OC content. 5% and 2% concentrations are more common as "civilian" sprays.

Game Effects: mist or burst is POT 12, spray is POT 16 against humans. Versus other mammals, the effects are reduced:  POT 10 for mist, 14 for spray. Effects are minimal or hard to detect on other animals. The spray version might not affect the eyes or respiratory system if directed at the legs, arms, or stomach.

CON roll failed:  blindness for 30 minutes, burning sensation in exposed skin for 60 minutes, coughing and lung spasms for 15 minutes (making breathing and speaking difficult). Many skills are halved or entirely unusable for 15 minutes or more. STR, DEX and CON are reduced by 5 points for 15 minutes (hit points are not affected, but damage bonus and carrying capacity are).

CON roll successful:  partial blindness for 15 minutes, burning sensation in exposed skin for 45 minutes, coughing and lung spasms for 3 minutes (making breathing and speaking difficult). Many skills have negative modifiers, at least -10%, for 3 minutes or more. STR, DEX and CON are reduced by 2 points for 3 minutes (hit points are not affected, but damage bonus and carrying capacity are).
