a complete Science-One vehicle set

 

     The Scientific-One vehicles are mobile laboratories on wheels, using the same basic design as the Overland Train; they are entirely compatible with that system. The control car can detach from the lab modules and explore on its own. The lab modules have their own fusion power sources (unlike the payload cars of the Overland Train), but do not have driving controls. There are only six of these vehicle sets stored around the country; each is the focus of several other, smaller Science and Recon teams in the same area. The usual configuration is a control car, a payload car (drawing power from the control car), a medical lab module, and a research lab module, for a total length of 61 meters. While teams vary, the usual crew is six persons:  driver, team leader, and four "scientists"; at least one of the crew is a fully qualified medical doctor and surgeon, one person will be assigned as "medical assistant", and at least two people will be trained to operate the Mk 2 HAAM suit.

     Each control car contains living quarters for a crew of six -- including a Morrow Project computer, Laserdisc drive, sleeping quarters with six bunks, galley and dining table for four persons, freezer, shower and toilet, and small clothes washing machine and dryer! The two "ground level" entrances (just ahead of the sponsons) open into small (about 0.9 m square:  1 person, or two very good friends) airlocks; there is also a roof hatch without an airlock. The vehicle has air conditioning and a complete NBC filter and decontamination system (the box between/above the sponsons contains the filters and intakes for this), and can support its crew while sealed for at least a couple of months with the supplies and equipment on board. A 1000-liter water tank is fitted, along with a sophisticated water filtration system. Several voice communication stations are installed, plus two television communication stations (one in the cab, one at the dining table), which connect all the control car with all the attached modules. The doors can be locked and unlocked with Morrow Project ID cards.

     The three-seat cab is fitted with a PRC-70 radio, headlights, external spotlights, horns, rear-view mirrors, voice and television communication stations, Autonav, another Morrow Project computer, controls for the weapons, and a sensor platform on an extensible mast. The mast carries a color television camera, PPS-5 radar, thermal imaging camera (mostly the guts of a PAS-7 thermal viewer), antennae, infrared spotlight, and other equipment about 2 meters above the cab of the control car (7.8 m above the ground).

     A retractable turret is fitted at the top of each sponson; the weapons in the turrets are controlled remotely from the cab.

     The tires are 3.5 meters in diameter. A "caboose" control cars can be slaved to a "lead" car and will track the same as a payload car or lab module. Note the control cars can only be attached to Scientific-One at their "rear" end -- the front doesn't have the couplings, power and control cables, etc. The control car can be fitted with a snowplow/dozer blade on front. There is a small cargo crane (capacity 1500 kg) mounted at the rear of the control car -- mostly to assist in repairs and changing tires; a complete tire and wheel weighs about 900 kg. A heavy-duty winch is fitted on the front (you can see the winch drum in the photograph), with at 84 meters of 1" cable, a 50 ton pulling capacity, and a 35 meters per minute line speed.

    Three M207 Stoner machineguns are carried, along with three spare barrels and 3000 rounds of linked 5.56mm ammunition -- a gun, spare barrel, and 1000 rounds of ammo (ten plastic tubs) are stored in a locker next to each gun port.

     The lab modules each have four wheels, with automatically-controlled steering and suspension. The actual inhabitable space is 5 meters wide and 7 meters long, with a headroom of about 2.5 meters. There is an airlock door on each side; spotlights are fitted on each side and end. Each is fitted with two Morrow Project computers and Laserdisc drives (and at least 30 Laserdiscs with technical information relating to the module purpose), a PRC-70 radio,  air conditioning and a complete NBC filter and decontamination system, and a 1000-liter water tank and filtration system. Voice-communication stations are installed in each room, plus a television comm station in the "office".

     The crew area has a small galley (sink, toaster oven and microwave, small fridge), a toilet/shower, fire extinguisher, and a double bunk bed; the water tank is at one end of the bed. The so-called office has a couple of floor-mounted chairs (with seat belts), the radio, air conditioning controls, a fire extinguisher, electrical controls and circuit breakers, the television comm station, one of the computers, and the library of Laserdiscs.

     Every Scientific-One vehicle set has a medical module. This module has a bio-comp and surgical suite, autoclave and sterilization unit, 3 med units, and medical lab (specifically for investigation and treatment of infectious diseases - it has an internal airlock). Consumables include 20 SCALP suits and a disturbing number of body bags.

     The standard research module equipment is usually oriented towards chemistry and biology. Glassware, a 0.25 cubic meter refrigerator, an oven (0.25 cubic meters, can reach 700 degrees Celsius), microscope, centrifuge, spectroscope, autoclave/sterilizer, test and reagent chemical set, etc.

     Besides the fire extinguishers listed below, there is a water sprinkler head in each compartment of the lab modules; there are emergency pull handles in each compartment, fusible links in the sprinkler heads, and a central suppress/shutoff control panel in the central passageway.

     Two M207 Stoner machineguns are carried in each lab module, along with two spare barrels and 2000 rounds of linked 5.56mm ammunition -- all stored in a locker in the central passageway.

     The enclosed payload car is a standard Overland Train unit, with four wheels, all powered (from the control car), with automatically-controlled steering and suspension. The cargo space is 5 meters wide and 7 meters long, and can carry 10 tons of cargo. It is fully enclosed, with two 3 meter wide sliding doors on each side. While it is pretty well sealed when the doors are closed, it does not have any NBC filters, heating or air conditioning. Cargo straps and other handling equipment (such as ramps) are carried in boxes and brackets under the deck; cargo tie-down points are fitted to the floor and ceiling. There are 110 volt electrical outlets inside the car, and work lights on the ceiling.

There are two large cargo doors on one side, and a single cargo door and a personnel door on the other side; spotlights are fitted on each side and end, plus on the undersides of the cargo doors. Each is fitted with a Morrow Project computer and Laserdisc drive (and at least 30 Laserdiscs with technical references), air conditioning and a complete NBC filter and decontamination system, and a 1000-liter water tank and filtration system. Note that if the interior is contaminated, decontamination is very tedious; only the personnel door has an airlock, and the supplied curtains don't provide much isolation. A voice-communication station (i.e., a telephone) are installed, along with two floor-mounted chairs, two fire extinguishers, and a small sink. At each cargo door are two fold-down work surfaces, to be used by technicians standing on the ground next to the module.
